Local source to look at/buy Rossi M92 lever action (.357)

Postby yuppiejr on Fri Jan 13, 2012 1:22 pm

Hi,

So I'm home enjoying some quality time with a bag of frozen peas after a little elective procedure to aid long term family planning and enjoying my wife's extended sympathies. In a moment of weakness she's become more receptive than normal over the idea of adding another long gun to the safe as long as it's something she might be able to enjoy as well. Right now I'm in love with the idea of a .357 magnum lever action which is an effective 100 yard deer rifle that shoots inexpensive ammo that matches up nicely with my revolver (try to keep common calibers in my collection if I can with limited success..). With the right ammo I think the carbine could also make a great home defense option for her.

There are a couple variations on the Rossi Model 92 that struck my fancy - while it's not "traditional" in a lever action I like the idea of a stainless steel brush gun and the MSRP difference from blued is almost nothing.

Here are the two I'm hoping to find locally to handle and possibly purchase:

R92-56018 - http://www.rossiusa.com/product-details ... umbseries= (16" stainless .357 lever action carbine, 8+1, 4.8 lbs)

Image

R92-56011 - http://www.rossiusa.com/product-details ... umbseries= (20" stainless .357 lever action rifle, 10+1, 5 lbs)

Image

Anyone know of a local source that carries the Rossi line including either/both of the rifles above so I could drive over and take a look at some of these?

Any opinions based on actual use of the Rossi / Puma / Braztech / Taurus lever action rifles? I own a Marlin 336 and have handled a Winchester model 94 if they make a good basis for comparison of ergonomics.

Thanks in advance for any leads / opinions of these rifles. -- J

I've seen a few of them at Gouger Mountain from time to time, both in the .44 and .357 mag varieties. Maybe Frontiersman might have them.

On a related note, this guy is well known as "The Rossi Specialist" on gunboards across the net for his work on these rifles. I've never had any dealings with him of course, but his name is all over whenever the Puma/Rossi lever rifles are mentioned:

I looked for that exact rifle (stainless) for quite a while before I gave up. Had to settle for the blued 16" version that I found on gunbroker. And to be honest, that was a hard one to find at the time. Got a good deal on it so I'm not complaining too much.
Shoots real good. Doesn't seem to like to feed factory length .38 specials, though. I have to load them a little long if I want to shoot .38's.

The actions smooth enough for me so I didn't do the Stevegunz action job but I did put in his stainless mag follower.
Yeah, but I shoot with THIS hand.

I've seen 'em at the Blaine Fleet Farm ...$4xx, IIRC.

I've got a '92 ... very unlike the Winchester '94, IMO ... much smoother. Marlin's a bit more comparable, but has been known to seize up, at speed, with repeated use.

I compete with a '73 ... but I still love my '92. It's a japanese Winchester. IIRC, they're makin' a 16in round bbl this year. If ya can swing the extra cash, I think they're worth consideration.

IIRC, Chiappa's makin' 'em now, too ... they're the new Legacy Sports '92's ... supplanting the Rossi's.

Never heard a complaint of the Rossi's, aside from the horrid safety on top of the bolt. That Steve guy'll either disable 'er remove it. Don't see too many though, neither.

Yuppiejr,

If the wife wants to try one out, I've got a Marlin 357 she can borrow for a weekend.
My daughters rifle, so I can't sell it.
Feeds all her reloads just fine, most of which were 115 gr Noslers in 38Spcl case.

I purchased a Rossi M92 .45Colt from Wolf's Den this past summer.
With either target reloads or hotter reloads, this lever is a real winner.
I grew up shooting and hunting with levers, and own a bunch of them, but the '92 is by far the most fun to shoot.
I wouldn't hesitate to take it hunting.

The price was $400.00, and knowing Brian, I would think that it's cheaper than any other place around.

Do get a 357 lever gun because they are great. I love my 1894 Marlin 357 and use it for deer hunting with a 4x scope on it. One of the most fun guns to shoot and great combo for a 357 revolver or Coonan Semi.

Well, it's been 48 hours and I'd compare the pain level as mild to moderate... I've basically been vegged out for 2 straight days watching History/Discovery/Military channel and a few movies with a rotating stock of frozen veggies down low.

The normal procedure is 30 minutes, mine was closer to an hour because the doc managed to nick a blood vessel (had the cauterizer handy and fixed it real quick) and it took longer than normal to manually "manipulate" the tubes in question externally to separate it from surrounding tissue before he could do the slice/snip/sew. The pre-manipulation was, by far, the most painful part of the process and involves grabbing the skin down there and manually separating the various tubes by squeezing/pinching from the outside so he can complete the rest of the procedure. I gathered the amount of work required in my case was greater than normal, some men require none and the tubes are free and clear/ready to go - I was just lucky I guess. Getting injected with the lidocane (sp?) was pretty intense for a couple of seconds - kind of a bee sting followed by that ache in your sternum you get after getting kicked in the boys... but the actual incision, extraction, cutting, cauterizing and stitching (x2) was pretty much painless.

Having witnessed my wife giving birth 3 times I have no complaints, an hour of my life followed by 2-3 days of lying around with 0 responsibility is a pretty small contribution in the greater scheme of things. I planned ahead so I can work a couple days from home this week just to play it safe and avoid making things mad down there, sounds like if you push it the consequences can be pretty painful for a coupe of subsequent weeks.

As far as the lever action goes... I called around, Dick's, Fleet Farm and Gander all carry Rossi but don't stock a lot of the pistol caliber carbines. I can special order what I want at Fleet Farm which also has the best price so far at $429 blued, $459 stainless so I may go that route.. going to hit the local haunts and probably swing through Wolf's Den before I make a final decision (also going to look at the Marlin in 1894c while I'm out). Thanks for the leads gents -- J

RE: .357 Carbine- I've been wanting one of these for a while as well. I've been looking at Marlins and seems like every time I find one it's well north of $500 which is just to far outside my "fun budget". The Rossi sounds like it might even be a better gun, certainly at a better price, and would go nicely with my M711 revolver.

Re: THE SNIP
Had that done myself shortly after the birth of my daughter (most horrific experience of my life. I never again want to be responsible for putting any woman through that). Wasn't too bad at all. Yeah, the "manipulation" was a bit rough. The most pain was when he did the actual snip which felt like a medium-strength hit to the boys. Interesting is that the first one hurt when he snipped and the second didn't. He was about done and I commented on that and he checked again and found he had snipped a ligament the second time. He said it happens, because it looks like a twisted mass of string and is hard to tell what's what. Also why it's very important to get your post-op count done.

If an FFL picked up 4-5 of these and made their availability known, they could probably sell them quickly. HINT HINT

Make sure you actually get one of each in your hands before decideing.
