Huldra Mk IV Upper

Postby dsm2nr on Tue Feb 28, 2012 6:18 pm

I was on the edge of trading my Knight's Armament plus $1200 for the SCAR. My wife said just wait and try it at Bill's (but not so politely). So I did. I was very disappointed in the way the SCAR performed. I liked everything about it, especially the mechanics, until I shot it. When you shoot a SCAR, you get the initial recoil from the round firing then you get another recoil from the bcg / piston slamming back. It feels like the bcg moves ultra slow and you can literally separate the recoils if you're looking for it.

Disappointed, I looked to finish a lower I had laying around. I figured I should throw a PSA upper on it and be glad I had an FN barrel. Then I drove past Fleet Farm. I checked out the specs on Huldra's website and it had the usual 1:7 twist, CMV 4150 barrel and was 16". I also noticed 1 MOA being listed for accuracy. I decided I'd jump in with one since I've always wanted to try a piston upper. I'm glad I did.

Today I threw on a PWS TTO brake on the upper and went to Bill's to sight it in and test it out. I was shocked at how well I did with it. I'm not the world's best shot and this was only my 2nd time using an EOTech, but I definitely had good groupings. I had one 3/8" group at 25 yards and a 3/4" group at 50 with cheap Federal AE223. I had tried Wolf ammo on Saturday for the first time and MAN DID IT STINK. I told my wife I wasn't going to shoot it again. Well, I did today with the Huldra. I'm glad I did because I didn't get that smell and smiled watching the gasses go towards where I was shooting and not sitting around me.

After getting home I broke down the rifle and cleaned it. While there is still some crud that gets into the bcg, it's nothing like a DI AR. There was very little and I spent maybe 5 minutes wiping out the upper and bcg. So I expected a ton to be in the piston, nope not there either. I spent even less time wiping that off. I really am amazed how many people say bad things about piston ARs. I haven't noticed any down sides yet. Although I've only put 120 rounds through it so far. I will definitely be recommending Huldra / Adams Arms to anyone looking to try a piston AR.

Forgot to add - Fitment is PERFECT. There is zero slop between the upper and lower. Every AR I've owned had at least some. I was shocked.

the only negative about a piston AR is the extra cost. or so i've heard

Thanks for sharing the info! I find myself hanging out in the firearms section of every Fleet Farm more and more - and the Huldra and AR accessory displays.

iirc they are Adams Arms systems, so they will have to come with the BCG. iirc they were just under $600 for the uppers and $1000 for a basic carbine

Yep they come with a bcg and ch. 5.56 midlength uppers are 600 but Monday they were on sale for 575. They also have a 5.45x39 carbine upper.

Yea that's actually a really good price that I've seen for piston uppers.

Thanks for the info, I'm heading past fleet farm on Thursday when I head home for a couple of days. Going to have to swing buy and take a look at them.

I got my CMMG Piston upper for $470.

I think it's great. Shoots anything flawlessly. Even was able to find a perfect fitting free-floating quad rail.

I'm not really sure why anyone would bad mouth piston guns, they're better and easier to clean.

I'm not sure of what the downsides to piston guns are because I've never seen any with mine.

I took a 3-day 2000 round carbine course (Jeff Gonzales) this past fall. In that class of 15 shooters, there were three guys shooting Huldras, including Dave (Dave-Huldra) and Stewart Mills (owner of the brand). All three performed flawlessly, and Dave was the high scorer for the rather grueling 3 day course. Huldra is an impressive firearm in my observation, but Dave won't ever let me shoot his...;)

Isn't Stewart Mills also the VP of Mill's FF?

Yes. And he's a good shot with pistol or rifle, and one of the most tactically stylish guys I know.
