I like my MTAC at 1x better than my Burris Extreme Tactical red dot at close stuff and it's pretty impressive the hits you can make at longer ranges when you crank it up to 4x. If you get into 3-gun you will not be very happy trying to hit targts at 200-400 yards with the typical 3-5 MOA red dot.

Any mount recommendations?

I feel like there are so many friggin options out there I just need to pick something, spend money, and be done with it. Learn from any potential mistakes later.

For anything short of a combat rifle I see little advantage to spending the extra mony on a detachable mount, especially since you're trying to stay on a budget. I picked up a PEPR mount on the ARFCOM EE for $50 and have been completely happy with it. If you do have to get it off all you need is an adjustable wrench in a pinch. I'd look into AgAuTHORITY's post and see if you can find the MTAC for $331, when I got mine a coule months ago the best price I could find was $360 shipped on ebay.

For what it is worth I have the Nikon M-223 1-4x20 Matte Point Blank with the Nikon mount and am very happy with it.

A 1x mag dot will let you be in irons, but 1-4x will put you in optics.

Around here, 90% of your shots will be under 40 yrds, with 9.5% being at 100yds or less, and 0.5% being further our than that. That is true for USPSA 3 gun and IDPA DMG 3 gun.

Which division do you feel is the most competitive?

I'm leaning towards irons right now. The Burris is just more money than I really want to spend, and any economy red dot has reviews talking about how they break all the time.

For $120, not including mount, it may be worth looking at the Primary Arms 1-4.

Several pages to read through on arfcom.

T scoped is pretty competitive, there are a lot of top shooters in that. T irons is slightly less so, but you will have some competition for sure.

If you go Irons, you can't have a 1-4x Mag scope. You need a red dot or iron sights. Just get a $150 range dot, I don't think you can go wrong with that. If you don't smash the damn thing it will work fine.

I think I've pretty much decided to go with Yankee Hill irons. I can buy a red dot later if I feel the need to. Something in the back of my brain says I should learn how to shoot with irons. Nothing is really off the table as I learn how to shoot.

On a budget: Vortex Strikefire + Magpul BUIS or any similar low cost BUIS you can find.

I used a Vortex Strikefire for a while and they aren't all that bad. They just aren't built quite like the EOTechs, Aimpoints, or Trijicons.
