I have gone the hot water route in the past. Now what I normally do is let the barrel cool somewhat, then patch with Sweets while it's still warm. I run the patch back and forth for about a minute, then do the same again. Doing this gets a lot of the copper fouling out quickly. Then I patch with a couple of water dampened patches and finally a dry patch. When I get it home I let it soak with foaming bore cleaner for several hours, put a couple dry patches through it and oil it. I've shot 1000's of rounds of surplus and always clean this way - I've had no rust or corrosion. A lot of the surplus ammo shoots very well, if the bore isn't too oversized, and even today the price is still less than what I can reload them for.
