He swears up and down that one should never ever clean an AR without one for fear of damaging the bore, which I can certainly respect. That said, the platform has been around for a long time, but the bore guide is a relatively new invention and I don't recall hearing/seeing evidence of screwed up barrels because we never used to use bore guides. So...what is the necessity of those things?
Erud wrote:I wouldn't say a bore guide is absolutely essential, but it is definitely nice to have. Keeps all of the solvents and crud out of your receiver and chamber and keeps the rod aligned down the center of the bore. A coated or carbon rod should not scratch your barrel or anything like that, but you might be surprised at how easy it is to shave carbon or pieces of the coating off on any sharp-ish edges if the rod flexes - for instance if you are pushing a very tight patch. The bore guide will support the rod at the chamber(where the scraping generally occurs) and the brush or jag supports it at the end leaving a lot less room to flex. Stuff you won't necessarily notice without a scope but it is still there and does not help accuracy. You can certainly get by without one, but with all of the money you have into your rifle, what's another $20 to clean it properly?

If you want to find it in stock and in a store Cabela's will be your best bet. Not your best price but your best bet.
