Second-tier rifles like Bushmaster, DPMS, RRA definitely have their place as range guns where reliability is secondary to cost and shooting such a rifle is just plinking in an environment where they won't be run hard. Colt does define the category and really is the only rifle that has the TDP. I personally don't own one, but if I were looking at the $800-$1000 category, the 6920 is what I'd get as an entry-level rifle if reliability in design and components was important to me. I've seen DMPS and Bushmasters fail often enough when stressed in some of these high round carbine courses that they wouldn't even be on my short list. I own a Stag, and it's been shot pretty hard over the last 3 years. Although Stag's reputation hasn't been the greatest, that particular rifle has never given me a single problem, and from what I've read, they've stepped up the design and components even since I bought mine.

Not real familiar with their rifles, but it is true of their 1911's.

Colt just LOST the military contract to Remington AKA Bushmaster and or DPMS.

Contracts go to the lowest bidder. Nothing more.

However owning and following the TDP for decades means something.

Following a TDP for years means that there is no innovation - no differentiation - no improvement - no original thoughts, just following a minimally acceptable set of standards.

While it seems that the lowest price wins a bid - that is not always the case. Section L of the Solicitation holds the evaluation criteria and on the one that Colt LOST, is was a "best value" contract, where price is a factor but not the deciding factor. Regardless, Colt Lost and I am not privy to the weighted evaluation information.

I dont want a rifle that is built from a TDP of minimally acceptable requirements. I am willing to forgo the MIL-SPEC nonsense for a better rifle. Because it says Mil-Spec doesnt make it suitable for my gun cabinet. There are better rifles out there near the same price point as the Colt..

Basically - you are paying for the prancing Pony... Myself, I would much rather look at ALL of the brands, and leave the Colt alone. There is nothing special about a Colt other than the Price.

Btw, you must not have seen the Colt CM901 or 6940 (monolithic rails) 6940P (piston gun) or IAR if you think there's no innovation.

What exactly would happen? The only negative comments I seem to read about Bushmaster are from those who've never handled one, the owners seem to like them just fine.

I own a bushy two colts and a rra.The bushy has had numerous fte for me.bushmaster is fine for a range gun but its not a battle rifle. OP I would look at Rock River as well I picked one up on this board for under $1000.

I'll second the RRA. I have a Rock River Arms AR and love the snot out of it. Plus, every time I pull that chrome BCG, I want to kiss it for being so easy to clean.

9310 bolts are nice but they don't shot peen or even MPI them.
