The statute regarding transporting a firearm of any type in MN is as follows:

97B.045 TRANSPORTATION OF FIREARMS

Subdivision 1.Restrictions.

A person may not transport a firearm in a motor vehicle unless the firearm is:

(1) unloaded and in a gun case expressly made to contain a firearm, and the case fully encloses the firearm by being zipped, snapped, buckled, tied, or otherwise fastened, and without any portion of the firearm exposed;

(2) unloaded and in the closed trunk of a motor vehicle; or

(3) a handgun carried in compliance with sections 624.714 and 624.715.

...

The full statute can be found here

I'm sure I will be roundly chastised - but it there any case law for vehicles not equipped with a trunk (ie. SUV or hatchback)? I've been searching, but I know there are folks here much more educated than I to answer.

Way I read it is that you may only transport a firearm in a MV in one of the three modes listed

For a trunkless vehicle, option 1 is the only viable choice for a long gun.

Hate to say it, but as it's written, option 2 looks to be using the vehcle trunk as the "Case" which I would thing to bs problematic.

FWIW, I transport unloaded, with no mags in the rifle or in the accy pockets of the case and use the locked back of my vehicle. If in my Tahoe. I cover them so they are not in plain view.

Except that you can also carry a loaded rifle or shotgun in public with it... just not transporting via a vehicle.. tman posted the correct statute above.

I've read that assertion before, but I haven't been able to find it in statute. What are you referring to?
