Wasn't the .276 Pederson the original cartridge that the M1 Garand was designed for?

IIRC, the Garand and the Pederson rifle were both chambered in .276 Pederson. In the end the 30-06 round won out because the Pederson was "underpowered" and 30 cal was a common round.
