AR type sights on shotgun

Postby tweener on Mon Dec 24, 2012 2:56 am

I have a 18.5" shot gun with a continuous rail on the top, and was wondering what folks recommend for sights on something like this.

If I go with AR type sights, which front sight do I need? A Std, or a "gas block" front sight? I have never owned an AR with front rails or gas block rails, so i do not knwo what "plane" these sit on.

I am thinking I need a "std" front sight.

I am also open to opinions on how to outfit this gun. wouldn't mind a a rear ghost ring with a rather huge aperture, if I can find one.

The gas block front sight is a combination of the gas block (essential to AR function) and a front sight post. You don't want that, as it won't fit your shotgun.

I'd look at the fixed sight options personally. Unless you have another optic, on a QD mount (or can co-witness through it), the fold down option adds cost, higher component count increases Murphy factor, and weight.

Something else to consider - inside a house, looking down the barrel alone will get you MOB (minute of bad-guy).

AR "rail" mounted front sights come in TWO heights.....Gas block height and "STD" height...

My question was concerning which one is the correct height to mount on a rail that is is the same height as the rail the rear sight is mounted on....I have been searching and it appears the "gas block" height front sights will not line up correctly if they are mounted on the same plane as the rear sight.....becasue an AR gas block with rail, is typically lower than the rear AR rail......

please correct me if I am wrong.

What are you mounting the front sight to?

i'm thinkin it's a UTAS or KSG, maybe the SRM 12-16?

to answer your question, you want the STD height sights. i'd suggest getting them in a package, that way you're CERTAIN they match. if not, at least buy from the same mfgr
