Cantilever slug barrel for 20 gage 870

Postby bucktail on Sun Feb 03, 2013 10:54 am

One of the members of our sportsman's club showed up with some shotguns that the widow of a recently deceased friend had asked him to sell for her. I had some cash in my pocket left over from a trip I'd just gotten back from, so I picked up an 870 express in 20 gage.

All of my deer hunting has been in slug zone, but I've never done the rifled slug thing. I went from foster slugs to muzzle loader in the late 90's. It looks to me as though the slug thing may be worth a second look.

There are 2 offerings that I've found locally. One is made by mossburg for the 870. It is 24". It seemed a bit long to me, but the smoothbore barrel for my 835 is that length and it balances well and doesn't seem ungainly at all. The other option is Remington. It is an 18.5" barrel. It seems that it might make the gun a bit butt heavy.

Does anyone have either of the 2 that would care to comment on the balance? Are there any other options that I should be looking at? I seem to remember Hastings making a barrel back when I got into muzzle loading, but I haven't seen one lately.

Love the Remington and Hastings barrels for the 870 in 12 or 20. Feel free to buy used- it's much cheaper. Feed it Lightfield Hy-Bred sabots and put good glass/rings on it -- you'll shot cloverleafs at 100 yards.

Any ideas on where to get one? I'm probably going to the Sioux Falls gun show next weekend. Cabela's has remington and mossburg. Midwayusa has mossburg. Fleet farm in Brooklyn Park had one of the brands, but it isn't there now. I haven't looked anywhere beyond that. Is hastings still making one? Most of the used ones that I've seen are for 12's.

Crawl the web, be on the prowl, ready to buy. Crawl around the old/regular gun stores. They show up.
