Although this will primarily be a deer hunting rifle, I plan on trying to learn some long range shooting with it (not that I am going to shoot deer at any large distances). So hopefully I get a base and rings that will squeeze all of the accuracy out of my scope and rifle that I can. That is why the burris rings are looking pretty good to me as of right now.

Thanks guys,

In the case of the Signature Zee rings. The insert outside surfaces are conversw and the steel outer rings inside surface are concave. The inserts lock into the outer rings and the mating concave/convex surfaces are what allow them to gimbal and align with the mount and scope body without lapping. I have them on a 300 Win Mag, 450 Bushmaster, Wicked Mossberg 500 with rifled barrel what kicks like a mule. (I call her Francis), a Remington 700 in .30-06 to name a few. none of those sets have allowed the scope bodies to slide in them as long as you torque them to spec. The biggest point is that they protect the finish on your scope bodies from marring or scratching.

There are merits to integral one piece ring sets which after lapping, can be moved from rail to rail without having to re-lap. If I didn't have all these Sig Zees, those are what I'd have.

So far my plan is the burris XTR rings, a millet one piece base, and one of these wheeler mounting kits that has the lapping and torque wrench included. Has anyone used the wheeler kits before? Seem to be pretty popular and I am finding them all over.

Thanks,

I just returned a great scope mounting kit (Weaver) to jj on this forum. He loaned it to me through the Loan Borrow section. It allowed me to lap and then torque the rings and bases on my Weatherby. JJ is a great guy and saved me a good bit of money by not having to purchase the kit. If you are like me, and don't purchase a new scope every ten years or so, you might post to borrow a Scope Mounting Tool in the Loan Borrow Forum. If you change often, then purchasing your own set (this one had everything from the lapping compound to a torque wrench and instructions) would be a good investment.

If my habits of changing to new scopes begin to get more frequent, I too, will be investing in a kit. I sure liked the tools in the Weaver Kit. I'm no expert on tools (I have been an aircraft technician for almost 40 yrs) but I believe I'm qualified to judge Quality tooling over junk tooling. The Weaver is Quality All the way :thankyou:

If they're rings for picatinny, Badger Ordnance or Nightforce.
If they're rings for sporting/hunting and non-picatinny, I use Leupold rings
Almost all of my rifles now are converted to picatinny rails with QD optic mounts (LaRue and ADM) though.
