Marlin 336

Postby MXGreg on Fri Apr 19, 2013 12:19 pm

I'm starting to kick around the idea of getting a rifle and was looking at a Marlin 336W. I really like the look and being left handed the lever action appeals to me. Has anybody had any experience with this rifle? Any problems with it? Also, how is the availability of 30/30 ammo?

Thanks.

No idea about the 3030 ammo.
I have an older Marlin 336 in .35Remington. It's an accurate and reliable rifle, smooth light trigger, and easy to use lever action.
I've heard a few people say to stay away from the newer rifles, that they weren't made as well as the older ones...don't know if that's true or not. Mine was made in '51, and it's fabulous.
Most gunshops will have a few used ones on their racks, I think The Gunstop had a couple the last time I was in there.

I've got a .338 MX... one of my most favorite rifles!

IMO, the thing with these rifles is, ya can actually shoot em, with sights!... purdy much every other rifle, the stock's too high, and ya need a scope! And, ya put a peep on these, and use the new flex tip bullets, and they're every bit as accurate as a scoped bolt action!

Back in the mid 50's, When I was a baby, my father bought one in 35Rem. (model 336RC) He told my mother it would be mine when I grew up. (I can't believe she bought that story), However when I turned 15 I shot my first deer with it, I shot my first Antelope in Wyoming with it and even have taken Red Fox. Well today Dad has been gone for 7, years I'm going on 59 yo, and there has never been a problem with the Marlin! One thing nice about the 35 Rem. it can be handloaded with pistol bullets from a .357 Mag for cheap lower power shooting! Hunting in the North Woods you would be hard pressed to find a better rifle! :D

I have a 336c in 30-30, about three or four years old. Fit and finish of the metal is excellent. The walnut wood is nice but has a marshield anti scuff finish which is kind of matte tone. Shoots fine. 30-30 is about $15 a box nowadays. The 336w is a hardwood stock instead of walnut. Very durable robust lever gun.

We (my three brothers and I) had Marlins and the Winchester Model 94. Love the lever guns. The Marlins had much smooth action tho. The Model 94 is back in production now. Mfr'd in Japan- saw one the other day. Was kinda heavy I felt and spendy. What is the Marlin marked $ wise? 30-30 ammo seems always to be available.

I have a 336 in 30-30. It's awesome. Or is it my awesomeness that makes the rifle SEEM awesome? I can't remember for sure. Anyway, I really like it.

I have heard very poor things about the new marlin rifles. Something about when Cerberus or whichever bought them, they fired everyone at marlin and sent all the tooling to Remington. That is just what I heard, but I have been hearing very poor things about the new guns. A buddy of mine has an old 336 he got about 50 years ago or so, and it is an awesome rifle! I love the thing to death, but I would be very hesitant to purchase a new one.

No problem with 30-30 ammo. Still relatively cheap and almost always around. Not a military caliber.

Thanks for the comments guys. I'll have to go look for some resent reviews to see if the new guns are as good as the old ones. The one I'm looking at is priced at around $385 which I feel is pretty reasonable.

I would have replied sooner but had to go listen to Uncle Ted play his guitar.

Like I said I have a new Marlin 336c that's been great, so I dunno what all this talk of the new ones being bad is all about. Are you mistaking it for the pre and post 64 winchester quality?

I got marlin glenfield 30 -30. It was manufactured on 1982. Glanfields were sold at the Wal-Mart and it came with original tasco scope. I took it to the 50 yard range, great shooter. I was pleasantly surprised how accurate was the gun that was purchased at Wal-Mart for some 100 plus $ back in the days. . I am looking forward to next deer season. Attached is picture of my marlin.

I went ahead and purchased the Marlin. Got it at Walmart for $387. It had one glaring flaw, the hood on the front sight was cock-eyed. Once I got it home I removed it and found it had been installed backwards. Reinstalled it so the tab was in the slot and now it's nice and square. On the way home I had to make six stops before I found one box of 30/30 ammo (WTF?). Took it to the range and went through all 20 rounds of Remington 170gr Core-Lokt. The iron sights are kind of dark and I'd lose them against the black of the target (50 year old eyes). Other than that the gun worked great. Fit and finish seem good. I'm vary happy with it.
