My first AR: SR-15E3 IWS MOD 1, what's next?

Postby npthaiduong on Mon Apr 22, 2013 3:54 pm

Hello everyone,

I just placed an order for the Knight's SR-15E3 IWS MOD 1 for $1800 with shipping :D . I bought it directly from manufacturer through the direct channel for active military member.

I can't be happier with this rifle and can't wait to put my hands on it. I will post more actual pictures of it when I receive it from the FFL dealer in Rochester.

What should I get for the optic? I only shoot mid to close range for now so I think about a red dot sight or holographic. Can someone give me an advice of what to get?

Thank you

it all depends on what reticle you like. I have both an Eotech and an Aimpoint.

Eotech is on my piston AR15 because I like to shoot the hell out of that thing.

My Aimpoint is on my DI gun which is used for home defense as the battery life on it is ridiculous.

If it's just a range toy it won't matter just try both and see what you prefer.

It's a win win for all involved (You)

I like the EOTech's field of view, but as Lance said, the battery life on Aimpoints is great. Most people I know who run Aimpoints never turn them off. That doesn't work as well with EOTech.

If money were no object, I'd consider the Aimpoint T1 for a reflex sight, on a LaRue co-witness mount. Myself, I run the EOTech 551.

Thank you for your input everyone. I have seen the EOTech 551 before and really like it, but it is discontinued

If it's going to be a go to gun, you will want to get something that will always work. Eotech and Aimpoint both fit the bill, although the Eotech you want to make sure you get the sideways battery model. Having the batteries installed along the bore axis will eventually wear out the springs that contact the battery (I have done this).

If it's just a range toy, I really like the Vortex Strikefire. 1/2 the price or less of an Aimpoint for the same basic optic. I have one on my 22 upper and I love it. Not QUITE as nice as my Aimpoint, but serves the purpose just fine.

Don't forget about the mount. Larue all the way.

Be sure to check out the compact Trijicon RMR series. I just got a RMR01 3.25 MOA, battery version. Some have fiber optic dual illumination. Excellent reviews.

I like my Aimpoint, Eotech, and Ultradot 6 also. Check them all out.

Several great 1X4 scopes you might also consider. Vortex easy on your budget. I got a Used Trijicon TR24 for about the same price. My higher end optics are used as I can move up in quality/performance and there are plenty of nearly new being sold to feed an optics jones.

You have the Porsche of ARs. She deserves some classy eyewear.

I have to agree with Uffdaphil. With all the really good 1x4, 1x6 and now 1x8 power variables out there I'll never put another red dot/reflex sight on an AR again. Okay I still have one, but that just in case I ever decide to shoot a 3-gun match in Tac-limited vs. Tac-optics. Why limit yourself to zero magnification when you can have the best of both worlds. Plus it still works if the battery dies.

IMHO the best true 1-4X illuminated reticle scope you can find for the money is the Burris MTAC.

I have read the reviews about the Burris 1-4 x 24, and it seems like a very good optic for the money. How does it compare with the Aimpoint PRO Patrol?

You're asking something that really can't be compared. It's a magnified scope verses a non magnified red dot. They are used and perform differently in different conditions.

I see. Let me adjust the question a little bit: For close to mid range use, which one is better? I don't usually shoot long range

What do you consider close to mid-range?

I think close range is <50 yards and mid range is from 50 to 300 yards

I would say the low power variable is the "better" choice if you want to shoot out to 300 yards.

What size targets at distance, man-size or paper plate-size?
