best way to put a bipod on a plain jane AR?

Postby EJSG19 on Mon Apr 22, 2013 9:21 pm

Buddy has the AR below. Normal handgaurds, front sight, bayonet lug. What is the best way to adapt a Harris bipod to the gun without modifying the rifle?

Looking for product suggestions mainly or direction if this is a silly route to take.

They make rails that you can just add to normal handgaurds through the holes in the foreword end. I have them on mine, and while it is not the most secure mounting I am planning on testing a bipod in it and see how well it does. otherwise, I think Harris makes an adapter specifically for AR handgaurds that mounts through the holes in the hand guard in a similar way.

You can also screw a sling stud into a nut behind a washer capturing the hand guard and go that route.

Harris makes an adapter for doing just that. Here http://www.midwayusa.com/product/404111/harris-bipod-adapter-stud-swivel-5-ar-15-black

...but a good buddy would talk him into ditching that spring loaded, group busting, POS plastic junk for a free-float handguard. Look to Nordic Components for the best "bang for yer buck" in handguards.

My tip is to not screw with that bipod crap and learn to shoot it with irons without support.

Also this. ^^ I am saving up for a Troy alpha rail for a similar setup.

If your not going to use the iron sites, you could take the front iron off, and change the gas block. Go to a quad rail gas block. Or a single rail gas block, and a troy handguard. I changed mine on my windham weaponry. Works great. Can go to a forgrip, or a bipod, whatever i wanna put on there. But i have a scope on mine. So depends on if he wants to use the iron sites.

Just irons for now. Budget is tight as is spousal scrutiny. Doing this for him in exchange for some work he did for me.

I agree, next step is either a float tube or a red dot/ optic. But he handles it just fine with irons.

Check here. They probably have a handguard in stock that will work on yours so you can mount a bipod on it.

Bought alot of parts thru them and they seem to be very nice and helpful people to deal with.

I also have a Grip-pod and like it quite a bit when I bench shoot.

But, it should be noted that there are knock off Grip-pods out there that won't compare in quality to a real one.
