The iron sights are kind of dark and I'd lose them against the black of the target (50 year old eyes). Other than that the gun worked great.

As for losing the sights against the black of the target, try using a 6 O'clock hold instead of trying to hold on the center of the bull (some old timers call it the "pumpkin on a post" method). Either that, or get some blaze orange sight in dots.

Ya could get somethin' like this! ... ya'd need to figure out which sight, what height, and what-not!

Best to shoot what ya got and see what ya get! ... sometimes, a rifle's sights will bottom/top out, before zero'ing at 100yd 'er such! ... then measure the sight that's on there, and adjust, if necessary, when ordering a replacement!

Lyman also sells a nice tang peep fer the Marlin ... pair that with a globe front, and ya'd have a real nice setup!

I have a Ward's Westernfield 472 in .30-30. It was made by Mossberg in 1972 and is the same as their model 472.

If you want to try your hand at reloading the .30-30 is kind of fun to reload for.

I have reloaded a bit for it and it is fun to send .310 round balls out the muzzle. The 110 grain plinksters are fun as well.

Mine was very accurate with a 170 grain Nosler Solid Base Flat tip Boat tail. They discontinued that bullet and I haven't quite found anything to match the loads I had with that bullet.

Nice thing about that round is that it is relatively cheap to keep her running. One down side is that you are a bit limited in your factory ammo selection. Pretty much 150s or 170s.

I went ahead and purchased the Marlin. Got it at Walmart for $387. It had one glaring flaw, the hood on the front sight was cock-eyed. Once I got it home I removed it and found it had been installed backwards. Reinstalled it so the tab was in the slot and now it's nice and square. On the way home I had to make six stops before I found one box of 30/30 ammo (WTF?). Took it to the range and went through all 20 rounds of Remington 170gr Core-Lokt. The iron sights are kind of dark and I'd lose them against the black of the target (50 year old eyes). Other than that the gun worked great. Fit and finish seem good. I'm vary happy with it.

A little nail polish in your choice of color (white, red, neon green, etc) works wonders on the sights and can be very easily removed later.

You get out to shoot this anymore since? I have my reservations about the new ones, but if it is working for you more power to you! I would like one eventually, but we will see where finances get me. Does your rifle have the push button safety on the receiver? From the pictures it almost looks like it isn't there.

I put 40 rounds of Federal Fusion 150gr through it about a week ago. The gun works great, no problems at all. I've since put a scope on it with see-thru rings so now I have an excuse to take it back to the range. I would have done it today but we got a foot of snow Thursday morning and the range is a mess. Yes, it does have the safety button on the rear of the reciever.

I figured so. Either that or you didn't mind resting your cheek on that ammo when you squeezed the trigger.

My boy is a lefty. My daughter is righty but left eye dominant. She tried shooting lefty but couldn't do it so she is shooting right handed.

It will a bit easier starting the boy with the lever gun when he is ready. I am not sure what we will do for the .22s or bolt guns.

My girlfreind is also left handed so I've been trying to find guns that are lefty freindly. The safety on the Marlin is fairly easy to work with the thumb. I don't need to take my hand off the gun, or use my right hand, to switch it off. I picked up a Ruger SR22 because the ambi controls are really nice (it's a great little gun). We each have a Stevens 350 12ga (Ithaca 37 clone), bottom eject and 10 minutes on a drill press and the safety can be switched to left handed.

Four Seasons Sports in Red Wing had a used left handed bolt-action .22 (don't remember the brand) that I almost picked up. Might still be there.

All my Marlins came with gold bead front sights dont own any of the new ones.
I own several .22 Marlin 39As I would expect they would work for a lefty
