Quick release scope base?

Postby LumberZach on Wed Jun 19, 2013 11:45 pm

Hello again all,

I really feel like I ask more questions than I answer, so I apologize for that but I am working on that. I am looking to set a good scope on my AR-15, and I would really like to keep a set of magpul back up sights on it. So the issue at hand: I want a 1 piece rail, with quick detach capable. What do people know work for this sort of thing? I don't necessarily need a massively repeatable zero, I pretty much plan on sighting in the back up sights and almost never taking the scope off so that isn't a real issue. But I would like to be able to take the scope off, without tools, in a pinch. So what do you guys think? Have any of you guys used any?

Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

Yes, I have several. I recommend, and use, LaRue Tactical's mounts - all have QR... http://larue.com

LaRue's lock levers are a bit easier to use, but I don't think they're worth the extra price over American Defense Manufacturing. I have two ADM's and am very pleased with both the fit and finish and repeatablility of zero. The scope I have on the RFB won't fit in the hard case where it needs to be for me to shoot it, so that one comes off every time it goes in the case.

Ok, thanks guys.

I really like the larue mount, but as things are I will have a little while to do some research while I am saving up for something that expensive and a scope to put in it. The ADM looks pretty neat too, but still a little spendy. Has anyone used the burris mount with the quick release levers?

I have ADM, ARMS, Blackhawk, Burris, and LaRue on several different platforms.

All work fine, but my favorite is the Larue mounts followed by the ADM mounts.

You really do get what you pay for. I have Larue and Amer Defense, both are great products. Now I am pretty much using only Amer Def as they are great products and great people just over in WI.

LaRue, ADM and Bobro are very good quality. One that doesn't get a lot of press is Alamo Four Star. Their mounts are phenomenally strong and have better clamping power and reliability than the LT, ADM or Bobro. GDI mounts are the cream of the crop, but most people don't want to pay $600 for a scope mount.

Any of the above will work exceptionally well.

Glad to hear it. Really appreciate the hlelp guys. I really like the ADM, but at that price I may be willing to pay a little more for the larue. And I pretty much feel like the larue is the way to go if possible.

ADM is a good company, so don't discount them. The also won't mark up your rifle like the LT mounts will. Either way, you'll be happy. Personal politics aside, LT does make decent hardware.

+100 on the American Defense mount. I've tried and sold many different brand mounts before I tried the AD on my AR platform and there will never be another brand mounted on my AR.

I own a Burris P.E.P.R. mount. Its okay. If I had it to do over I'd go Larue. I wont switch now however.

My brother is rocking a PEPR mount and it's not a bad piece of kit. You just need to make sure it's torqued down correctly if you get the non-QD version.

I do now have to punch a sacred cow, though. LaRue mounts were designed for CQB optics on rifles that were going to be shot at under 100yds. Things like Aimpoints and EOTechs. LaRue later adapted the levers to a scope mount. Now, it's important to note this because LaRue QD lever mounts have the least amount of bearing surface of any of the aforementioned mounts. There was a Picatinny Arsenal Test that tested the clamping ability of various mounts, and the LaRue was the first to fail. Only a few passed the test, and two that I can think of right now off-hand are Alamo Four Star and GDI. I know that ADM did quite a bit better than LaRue.
For smaller optics, you're fine. For a rifle scope, I'd be more interested in a better quality mount like at least an ADM, or the Alamo Four Star DLOC.

For note:

Note the amount of daylight you see in the LaRue Mount under the lever. Note that you don't see that with an ADM. Food for thought..
