What's a Mosin Carbine M44 Worth?

Postby Thunder71 on Wed Feb 12, 2014 9:37 am

I've been thinking about adding one to the 'arsenal' but didn't care for length of the standard Mosin. I ran across a pretty nice carbine version yesterday with a great bore and trigger, smooth action, good wood, etc. They were asking $229 and said he's let it go for $200 - honestly, that sounded fair to me but wanted to do my homework first.

I believe it was a 1955?

Thoughts?

Not the exact one, but looked like this... I just prefer gun threads with photos.

Run of the mill M44's are going for about $200 now. Sadly the mosin is no longer a sub $100 rifle, especially the m44's. But yeah, as long as there isn't anything overly historically significant I think $200 is what you are going to get any m44 for.

Fleet Farm has the Chinese version for $139.99, full of cosmoline and in worse condition... figured this one is cleaned up and ready to roll in (what I think) is pretty good shape.

The Chinese is definitely not the same as the Russian.

During the panic last year I was offered $600 cash for my all numbers matching M44... I passed.

Wish you'd have passed 'em on to me!

$200 is about the asking prices I've seen lately... But I wouldn't leap to snatch something like that up - chances are there are folks out there selling them for less. Depends on the condition, really.

I sold a similar one about two months ago for $225 and it had the bayonet cleaning and pulling kit with just a little ammo.

A 1955 wouldn't be a Russian one, could be Hungarian or Romanian something.
200 is a decent price for a non-Chinese M44.
I have 2 Russians, a 46 and a 48. The 46 is all matching, with a blazing mirror bore. I paid $150 for it in 2008, I don't think I'd ever sell that one.
The 48 has a great bore too, but has an electro- penciled bolt with a tiny bit of corrosion on it. Got that one for $130 in 2010 I think, just because it was so cheap.

I kind of thought that '55' seemed out of date for the Russian model but don't know enough about them. I did try and talk him down, but the lowest he'll go is $200 because of its condition.

I've got on of the Polish ones from the mid 1950s, unfired with a beautiful blued finish. I'll never fire it!

My T53 looked horrible on the outside when I bough it. After cleaning the bore it looks like it has barely been shot. So I would not over look the chinese version if you find one with a decent stock.
