If you're looking at a semi-auto for trap / sporting clays I would say the Beretta. I had an 1100 and it was good. But the Beretta AL390 is so much better. It allows you to adjust the stock for your preference.

That being said I like the AL391 better than the 390 because of the change in the fore-end among other things. I'm not well versed on things like back-bored barrels, etc.. But the engineering of the AL390/AL391 is superb.

Just to make things more complicated there is a rising interest in the 16 gauge for sporting clays. The best compromise between a 12 and a 20. :)

Remember what you paid for this info.

Someone showed me an article recently in Field and Stream it was about shooting doves in Argentina. They have no limit on them and they have the 1000 in a day club. The guides had rental guns. The ones they say held up to that volume of fire were 1st the Beretta 391/390 then Benelli Montefeltro and I think they said that Brownings did ok. Of course this is a gun rag, I cant find the article, and I might as well just say I saw it on TV, or read it on some local gun forum.

I read the same article, they preferred the earlier version over the later version....

I know a couple of lumber salesmen who did the whole argentine trip, doves and ducks, one said he thinks he shot 10,000 rounds in one week.
of 12 guage.

The husband and I shoot Berettas. They're nice, but there's something about them that feels a bit different when shouldered than others. People say you like a Beretta or you don't. Be sure to thoroughly check one out if you're thinking about it. (Also, both, including mine which was really expensive since it's a model for a smaller shooter and is all adjustable, were well under $1500 each out the door.) People seem to like the Browning sporting clays models, too, but neither of us really ended up liking them. The lady's version (which probably doesn't apply to you ;) ) seemed very large and heavy and felt like the trigger was a big reach from my hand, even though it was basically the same overall length and weight as my Beretta. Benellis are very nice too but I wanted gas operated for the lowest recoil I could find. You should be able to find a solid model in any brand that will do what you want and be in your price range. :)

I shot a round with my neighbor's Beretta last summer. Missed a lot of birds until I realized that the super light trigger pull actually required that I increase my lead a little. After that I did well.

It is indeed a nice gun.

sorry for bring my two cents so late, but, i have recently seen a few remington 3200's for sale for around $1400, really worth looking at.
Their trap grade is in my humble owners opinion the best ever created. also you have local access to the god of all 3200's, in spicer mn for all your parts, information or customising.

Here is the end of the story - speaking of Spicer...

A few weeks ago I stopped in at Mel's Gun Shop and ended up with a Browning BT-99 Special Steel. Adjustable comb, adjustable recoil pad and ported barrel. It shoots like a dream! Mel gave me a good deal, dropping the price down from $999 to $850.

Now I have to wait for the trap season to start. :badmood:

By the way, if any of you are of the opinion I got screwed, keep it to yourself please. :)

congrats on the bt99. probably the favorite trap gun i ever shot except for a k80. both were borrowed from other shooters in the club. the kayo was very adjustable and the bt fit the way it was. i wish i would have bought one way back then.
