The .270 is a great choice. I see no advantage to having a .308 instead.

Blindfolded you wouldn't know the difference......neither would the deer.

Not that I recommend shooting blindfolded.

Isle's a pretty fair hike from Staples. I'm guessing anything he would save on the price would be made up in the cost of gas to get there.

Agreed, but EVERYTHING's a long way from Staples :D Trying to offer choices that had a selection worth the drive. Glad I didn't suggest Reed's in Walker.....

Was talking to my brother today, he suggested reed's... :P can't remember what for tho...

they are nice guns for the money. It is very easy to do a trigger job on an axis too. Pretty much remove a little bit of trigger spring, or use a different one (many use one from a pen), and do a little polishing. The biggest negative on them is the cheap plastic stock flexes a lot especially if you use a bipod. Many people are stiffening up the stocks by epoxying in steel/aluminum/graphite rods in to the forearm part, and adding some epoxy to the trigger area.

I just ordered one in 30-06, hard to beat for a descent rifle, with (crappy) scope and rings for $230. Or without the scope and rings for under $200.

I just got my rebate check from savage for my model 111 hunter I bought back in Oct. $75 off a rifle that was already on clearance isn't bad.

My eldest has used one for 3 deer seasons now in .308. Has performed well both at the range and in the field. The trigger leaves something to be desired but I believe they have addressed this on the latest version available and to be honest while I have better triggers on other rifles it is just as accurate as they are.

The Axis and Axis XP models do NOT include the Accutrigger, the Axis II XP does include it for those who are considering purchasing one of these. The Axis II XP typically costs a bit more than the Axis / Axis XP which you can upgrade with an aftermarket trigger later if you so desire.

According to their website, the Axis II XP is only available packaged with a scope (Weaver 3-9x40).

Looking at internet pricing, the Axis II XP runs anywhere from $80 to $110 more than the Axis, and $50 - 70 more than the Axis XP (Axis XP is combo package with a 3-9x40 scope, I believe it uses a Bushnell scope). Based on everything I've heard regarding the AccuTrigger, and the upgrade to a Weaver scope, I would say the Axis II XP is worth the upcharge over the Axis.

That's actually what I was looking at. Axis II XP combo. It does have a Bushnell scope. I have only hunted with shotguns and rifles with iron sights. If I find the Bushnell inadequate I can always upgrade.

Everything I've seen - including the Savage website - indicates that the Axis II comes with a WEAVER scope, not Bushnell. You might want to check that.

ATK owns Weaver and Savage so it makes sense that their newer bundles in the Axis II+ series include the Weaver Kaspa scopes, guessing the older stock of XP's may pre-date the acquisition of Savage back in mid 2013.

The Bushnell Banner scopes made in Korea are actually decent glass at the price point, while their Pronghorn scopes made in China (available in blister packs vs boxes) are pretty much garbage and comparable to the lower end Tasco/Barska stuff. Not sure which of the Bushnells is included in the original XP package since I don't own one but would be curious if anyone owns one and can ID it? (If it's made in China, it's a Pronghorn - Korea it's a Banner)

Yep, that's the $35 made in China "box of chocolates" variety Bushnell. They work perfectly fine for the life of a rifle in some cases, others they fall apart after a single range trip.. you never know what you're going to get. :)

The Kaspa 3-9x40 scopes run about $100 online, eBay resale is between $60 and 80 as a non-boxed scope, so the difference in price going from the Axis + Bushnell bundle to a Weaver scope package seems justified based on the value of the scope, particularly if you get the Accutrigger upgrade as well for less than $100.

Thank for all the advice guys. I will recheck what kind of scope is on the package offer at FF. I am feeling good about the purchase at this point. I have also got good feedback from guys at work on Savage Axis models.
