S&W M&P10 problems

Postby cobb on Sat Jan 24, 2015 10:34 am

Just picked up my Smith & Wesson M&P10 in of course .308 Winchester that I had ordered. I had read about problems with the barrel and one claimed that his barrels split, said S&W would not help him and of course he had no pictures of it. Another mentioned that his barrel was stamped ".308 1/10 5R" so hard that you could see it in the barrel rifling opposite the stamp. Yep you can, see attached picture.

Hard to get a picture, either the bright light blured everything out, or the focus was off, but I did get one with enough light and in focus that you can see the high spots in the grooves of the rifling at the top, opposite the stamp on the outside of the barrel. In the picture you can only see a couple high spots, but there are several, again, just could not get the bright light and camera to get along. Some of the rifling looks poor also, don't think so, I have not cleaned the rifle at all and it looks like there is a preservative in the bore. S&W did not seem surprised when I called them about it, they already sent me a return label by e-mail and they said they would rebarrel if needed.

I just ordered mine from Palmetto for $999...couldn't pass that up. I saw Nutnfancy did a review on it and absolutely loved the rifle. Was hitting out to 707 yards. Hopefully mine is problem free. I've read abit about the gas port being to small in some instances. May have to bore it out and put on an adjustable gb if that's the case. we shall see!

S&W's quality control has gone to pot. Your rifle is a perfect example of the fluctuating quality they now put out. Some might be good, and some might be bad. It's a roll of the dice.

Got the rifle back today, work order says they replaced barrel and firing pin spring. Looking on the barrel where it is stamped ".308 1/10 5R", if I remember correctly, the wording is now reversed on the new barrel. Before when holding the rifle, muzzle to your left and the butt to your right, you could read the print on the original barrel. Now that is reversed, the muzzle to the right and butt to the left to read the printing.

If anyone has a S&W M&P10, I would be curious as to how the stamping on your barrel reads.
