223Rem or 5.56X45 is another cartridge that should not be used in my opinion, not saying it won't work with heavier projectiles, but just not for me.
But then I feel the same way about using the 338 and above Super Magnums because of overkill, when correct shot placement is preferred.
YMMV.
I have MY beliefs and my recommendations, but even I have broken these when circumstances were correct.
Buy a 30-06 if you are only buying one rifle. This will fit 99% of your needs.
But a 308 will be great for whitetail deer in the lower 48. The shorter action means a lot to some, doesn't do anything for me.
Have you seen what the monolithic bullets do on a deer? And, FWIW, IMO, the lighter ones work better. Faster. 3,000+ fps, 100% weight retention, ability to go through any bone.
Dead. Right. There.
And I am not talking about little does and 1.5 year-old bucks. The funny thing is, with that little pill flying at warp speed, you WANT to hit the bone. The biggest downside is the loss of some shoulder meat. That said, watching a 12-year-old girl drop her first deer last year (biggest one in deer camp) with the .223 she shoots well because she isn't afraid of it > a little potential for shoulder meat but a less than perfect shot placement on her first deer.
Disclaimer: I have no idea what the .223 does at longer ranges on deer (>150 yards) and I don't plan on finding out. I just know it works great with vital shots up-close, and the little-ones like shooting it enough that they shoot it well.
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.
