I have the AK bug again

Postby TooFewGuns on Mon Oct 12, 2015 5:16 pm

Maybe it is all of the assault weapon ban talk, or maybe it is my love for the history of the AK, but I am seriously thinking about getting an AK. I have had several Century Arms guns over the years, but I am thinking about trying something different. I saw the PSA receiver that was on the sales section last week and had my normal concerns about their products. Has anyone fired one of their AKs? I know of the many issues that people have had with their budget ARs. I've heard "buy once, cry once" many times but seem to be a slow learner. I seem to buy now, sell later and would prefer to get something that I will be satisfied with. I just want a decent, by AK standards, receiver and barrel that I can try out the new Magpul hardware on.

Any input from experience with mid level or higher end Aks would be helpful.

I have not handled one but have heard great things about the DDI models. Fenocite green mountain barrels and all the right parts with good QC. Sounds good to me for around $800. You can get one all Magpul'd out from them.

Fenocite? please explain to this uneducated non-operator what pray tell "Fenocite" is.
I will never apologize for being an American.

Fenocite is a variety of nitride finish. Essentially it blackens and hardens the steel. Superior to chrome lining the barrel.

I'll have to check it out. I'm not familiar with Destructive Devices Industries. It looks like a nice gun, far better looking that some of the Century guns that I have had. Thanks! Now to work on the plan for explaining it to my wife. Considering that I got a new Beretta autoloader for birds last month, it will need to be a good one.

If you haven't seen the recent production WASRs definitely give them a look. They're honestly the best purchase at ~$600.

Stepping up from that? Hard to beat an Arsenal, however there's been talks that Bulgaria may start limiting their imports of SLR107s.

Definitive Arms is making the best AKs right now, period. Maybe as good as Rifle Dyanimics firearms, at half the cost.

They are head and shoulders above DDI and anything Century is currently producing. They even have the magpul packages with their new Zhukov folding stocks.

Picked up a Ruger AR-556 GI from GAG few weeks back, sweet little plinker for $580. Hammer forged barrel with 1:8 twist, forward assist, 6 position stock, rapid deploy rear pop-up and a A2 front but what I really like is the ease of removal of the hand guard to upgrade to a quad rail (actual one man job lol). Have ran about 500 rds through it so far and no hiccups.

My bad.

Well, a trip to Fleet Farm and I am now the owner of a Saiga 5.45x39. With the imports halted on these, I took the chance to get a Russian model while I could. They had a pretty impressive sale. Their tags say $799, on sale for $519. This is my first venture into the AK-74 variants. It is already on the operating table, awaiting the Magpul Zhukov upgrades.

I got the Zhukov stock and the AK+ grip, I haven;t decided what to do with the front yet. I may do the Zhukov hand guard, possibly a rail instead.
