He must live under a rock if that surprises him. I don't think we have a full on gun panic going on but I think a lot of people are worried about the election. If you want an AR or need ammo now is the time to buy, not in a few months.

Just take some Saturday and hit all the big stores in the metro, Frontiersman, Gunstop, Southwest Arms, Arnzen Arms, Capra's and one of the Cabela's.

Thanks for all the help, guys - talked to a guy who's EX-military and is into AR's, and he recommended a S&W M&P 15 Sport II with a drop in trigger. Looked at a couple, and then found an internet dealer that has them IN STOCK (at least yesterday, that is...) for $619!!! I gots a burnin' feelin' in my hip pocket!!! The guy also clued me in to the existence of the Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 3x-9x x 40 with Mil Dot sights for $349 at Cabela's. Compared to what I paid for a Leopold Mark IV Tac scope with illuminated reticle for nearly 4 times that price, that scope is one hell of a deal!!

Southwest Arms has them in stock, if you don't want to wait for it to ship from an online dealer.

I have a lot of Leupold MK2's, I think they are similar the the MK AR series. They are solid scopes. Made in the USA too! Depending on what you are using it for the 1-4X may be fine and have a more tacticool look. The VXR Patrol looks cool too but is a bit more money.

I was at Bills on Saturday. I wound up buying 2 lowers with sequential serial numbers. I hope to have enough by November to ensure my bloodline has enough of these to last 100's of years. Fwiw.

Also, there's a real quality difference at the $1200 mark. Depending on what you want it for, a rifles features may or may not be important. Rifles with modern handrails with free float barrels will cost more than rifles that have delta rings and traditional handguards. If you want flip up sights instead of a fixed front sight, the whole set up will be more (low pro gas block, etc). I wouldn't buy anything that didn't have cold hammer forged chrome lined barrels. Most bare bones rifles come with an A2 birdcage for flash hider. My point is, every option adds to the price. For guys who have no idea what they like (furniture for example), they wind up buying stuff twice. Meaning, they buy a cheap rifle for $800 and then start buying new parts and swapping them out. Eventually, you'll get to $1200 if you make use of your rifle and arent just putting it in the safe. For a basic rifle under $800, the S&W and the new Ruger are hard to beat. Just under $1000, colt is probably the best. At $1200 (or close) I'd look at BCM. Those rifles are "go to war" ready. Period. Spikes tactical also makes good stuff in that price range, too. Buy once, cry once. If it's a casual plinker, go less expensive. If it will ever be used for self defense, spend the money now.

If you're looking for red dots, from cheaper to more expensive, you should look at the Vortex Sparc 2 at about $175. Primary arms also makes an excellent red dot for around the same money. The next jump up would be the aimpoint pro at around $375. Of course the gold standard is the aimpoint t2, but it's much more expensive. Guys might disagree, but stay away from bushnell, holosun, eotech for a defensive rifle. Also, although I like the idea, stay away from the trijicon MRO for now until they iron out some bugs.

Lastly, if you're worried about a ban, like I am, buy magazines. I mean lots of magazines. You can get new magpul pmags or gi mags for $10 a piece. I'd recommend 100 for each rifle (yes I'm serious). Magazines are disposable and they wear out or break, often. Also, I know you're a "gun guy" and know more about ammo than most, but for guys who don't reload, I'd recommend buying/storing as much ammo as possible. Meaning, a lifetimes worth. If you can afford it, buy 10,000 of each caliber you own. I E even arguing with my wife, but even though I can't afford it right now, I might buy an entire reloading set up. I figure with a heavy duty progressive press, dies, all the accessories, I'm looking at a grand. I'd be buying it and keeping it in their boxes, because I don't even have room for it now. But who knows what the future will bring after November. Along with the new set up, I'm thinking maybe $2000 in components/powder too.

Randy, during the last panic reloading presses and accessories were harder to get but still available, components on the other hand simply disappeared

Thanks, yeah, I know. Powder was impossible. Like all ammo.

And even though I don't have room for it (or the money), now is the time to do it. My wife always gives in when I'm persistent. But for some reason she's really worried about this. And it's not necessarily about the money. She thinks that our garage will suddenly become an ammunition factory and that the ATF, along with the FBI, SWAT and the local PD will be kicking down our door.

Well, I have a S&W MP-15 Sport 2 in the basement! Went over to Gunstop, which is my favorite place being the 800 lb. reloading troll, and was consigning one of my guns that I'll never shoot again, and saw a new Sport 2 sitting on the rack for $629. :( :o  :? Now, while there is still the 7% sales tax for old Gubernor Meth Head which amounted to $42 or so, this way I went home with it NOW and I spent the money with people I have known for over 20 years. DUH??????

So, got the gun, now need an Armalite 1 piece scope mount and a Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 3x-9x x40 mil dot scope. Already have a 1976 vintage Bonanza Bench Rest .223 die that I got when I bought my Colt SP1, so I'm good to go!!

If Hillary gets elected, and we lose the Republican Majority in the House , that could be possible....

10K is more like a ~3 year supply in my experience, and I consider myself to be a fairly low-volume shooter. Of course, that's because USPSA and similar matches are the majority of my shooting, so I burn through what "normal" people would probably consider to be a lot of pistol ammo. (I'm sure the antis would be downright horrified.) Those who shoot 3-gun probably feel the same way about AR & shotgun ammo. If, on the other hand, you're just trying to stock up enough to go deer hunting "forever," then 10K might be overkill. It all depends on what your habits/needs are.

In terms of a ban or very strict purchase limit restrictions, shooting sports, training or leisurely days shooting away on the range would become virtually extinct. Still, for a guy like me who shoots around 5000 rounds a year now, ammo supplies would be viewed solely as a commodity only to be used for self defense purposes. I'm 50 now. Based on the number of rounds I've fired off in a self defense crisis in my lifetime, I'd estimate a supply of 10,000 rounds to last me................10,000 years.

But just to be clear, I advocated 10k rounds of each caliber owned. For someone who owns 3 or 4 calibers, that becomes a lot of ammo for sparing use. Currently I've consolidated to only 4 calibers. 2 pistol calibers of 9mm and 380. I dabbled in 45 for a bit, but traded out of it. 9mm covers multiple platforms for me from my carry pistols and pistol caliber carbine. I e also consolidated further in that with only very few exceptions, I'm trying to pare everything down to firearms that run on glock mags. My only 2 rifle calibers are 556 and 300blk. That way all of my lowers and mags become interchangeable. 223/556 allows me an adequate self defense round and 300blk is very versatile in that I can run stout supers or subs, suppressed (working on a suppressor). In a last resort scenario, 300blk can take just about any game that I'd need to hunt (something I've never done, but could/would try in case of a survival SHTF situation). Of course, both calibers share the same mags for me.

Finally, as a personal insight; I own firearms for only one purpose- self defense. I don't own any range toys (and have never in the 24 years I've owned firearms). My pistols are all for conceal carry, only. My rifles are all for fighting. This explains why I don't have all sorts of exotic or strange/varying calibers. I suppose if I have to take a shot past 500 yards, under any circumstance, than things have gotten so bad that we probably wouldn't even be calling ourselves the Unkted States any longer. Also, I'd recommend a buy once and put it away item of Ar500 rifle plates (they will last a lifetime, fwiw). A set for everyone in your family.

Fair points all around, Randygmn. I have a hard time disagreeing in any significant way with you, and merely meant my earlier post to point out that 10K rounds means different things to different people. You'll be better prepared than me should we end up in a Walking Dead or Jericho type of situation (unfortunately, I don't own any "real" rifles; just a .22), but I at least won't be helpless. :)
