Scope for Ruger Precision Rifle? (Not my Nikon?)

Postby Bergie on Tue May 16, 2017 9:22 pm

Have a brand spankin' new RPR in 6.5 and am thinking about what it deserves for glass. I have a Nikon Monarch 4-16, but am thinking it should have something that goes out to take full advantage of this caliber. The Nikon has the BDC circles, which I'm not fond of. Should I just be content with the Nikon since I already have it ready to mount? Or am I right in assuming it should have something that goes to 24 or 25? (I won't start down the road of 'Which one now!' if ya'll think it needs more power. .....however, if you do have a strong suggestion I won't ignore it!)

Are you just looking to use for fun, or anything specific?

The bdc works fine for hunting but not the best for target work. I have several nikons and they are solid. However for a gun like this I'd put a leupold on it. I have several of these including vx2,vx3, vx6 and mk4. I would say the vx6 would be nice for that rifle or vx3 if you are on a budget. They have a variety of reticles and will put any one in you want in the custom shop. A few of mine have custom shop reticles. Also I don't know you need that much power. You can save mine with a 18x and it should be plenty.

You probably have enough magnification for the range you'll be shooting.

But the rule of thumb is spend twice what you paid for the gun on glass. ;)

If you want to practice turning turrets, the SWFA Super Sniper fixed with mil-quad reticle is hard to beat. Especially if you wait until a big sale.

TONS of adjustment. Repeatable adjustments. Not expensive.
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

LZ made a good point- What's its use? For years, I've been the 300+ yrd 'look out' in our hunting group. Whether it's deer running out of the woods from the drivers, to the Wyoming speed-goats across the flats. I've used my 300 WM for all of this, but wanted to try something different (300wm is a lot for a pronghorn, regardless of the range). I was thinking Vortex Viper PST- much less than the Burris, but seems to be very good. Millett looks like a paper towel tube. Regardless, an MOA scope isn't much good on a moving target; wish Burris made the XTR II CQ in a higher power.

What is the intended primary use and what is your budget?

ON the low end I would look at the vortex Viper PST Gen 2 5-25 FFP EBR -2c reticle.

If I had the budget I would get the Razor Gen 2 4.5-27 with the same reticle.

Check out Nikon's brand new BLACK X1000 4-16 Illuminated Reticle in MOA/MRAD. Very nice scope, great glass,30mm tube and covered by nikon's No Fault Policy should something ever happen to it. Best of all, under $600.

I put a Nightforce Competition on mine and I have shot it at 600 yards. Great Scope....but expensive. Great Rifle. I really enjoy hitting "X" at 600 yards :D

I would personally want something with a higher magnification than 16 especially if your planning on shots over 300 yards. Not saying it can't be done, but that's just me. I target shoot at 100 yards dialed up to 24x... But that's target shooting, not hunting.

I really like my Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP scopes, I have two of them, but right now, in that price range, I really like the Burris XTR II 6-25 FFP better. More elevation, and a bigger tube.
