7.62x39 question

Hey all I'm wanting to get a 7.62x39 rifle and I am at a debate. Do I just go ahead and get an upper for my ar15 or should I go for a dedicated system like a cmmg mutant. I would consider doing a 16" upper from primary arms or possibly palmetto state. I am
Not looking to go to an ak but possibly an sks but would like to hear when you all fine people think. Any other options on this specific caliber would be great.

The AR's can be finicky. The mutant is expensive. I love my AK, why no AK?

If that's your only reason, you should probably reconsider...

I've also heard the AR's in that caliber can be finicky, I'd suggest an SKS, or even better, an AK. These days, AK's can be configured almost as much as AR's as far as furniture, optics, and accessories. If you already have an AR, and are looking for another rifle, you owe it to yourself to highly consider the AK. Especially since your considering the 7.62x39.
Every firearm enthusiast should have or at least be familiar with the AK pattern rifles.

Have you considered the 300BLK?
Almost the same as the 7.62x39, but in an AR package. All you'd need is an upper, shipped to your door, and you're set. Of course the ammo price doesn't come close to being as cheap as x39...

My AR-15 in 7.62X39 shoots great with no issues.
BUT it all boils down to what ammo you have available.
I purposely purchased Wolf ammo when Sportsmans Guide sold it for $67/1000 rounds. (I purchased 7,000+ rounds)
Wolf ammo and most surplus ammo is 0.310/0.311" diameter projectiles.
My AR-15 barrel in 7.62X39 is stamped .310 on bottom ahead of gas block.
Thus the accuracy will inherently be better as bore and projectile ar matched.

Shooting Wolf ammo thru a 0.308 barrel will result in poor accuracy and high pressure.
Shooting USA ammo thru a 0.310" barrel will result in poor accuracy and lower pressure causing issues.

You decide what you want.

Bought it. Not sure but thinking BUSHMASTER. Think I paid $444 for a complete flat-top A3 style upper.

I have a colt AR that was made in 7.62x39. Its quite accurate given that all I have ever shot I it was cheap milsurp ammo. 1-1.5 inches at 100 yards. It's very reliable with the colt factory 5 round mags. My dad had some 30 ak mags welded to ar mag tops that don't work for love or money. The cartridge just isn't made for mags with minimal bend. My opinion is the ar doesn't handle hicap mags, but otherwise works well.

The AK beats my cheek up. I have one but rarely shoot it.

Have shot a mini 30 some. Not horribly accurate, but fun.

The sks isn't bad, but I haven't seen one that shoots better than 3" at 100. Most are worse than that.

I know a guy who hunts with a cz mini Mauser in 30 commie, and gets deer pretty well with it. The mini shoots his handloads to 1.5" at 200. Matching bore size to bullet is a big deal.

Really it's all about what you want and why. If you want to hunt with it, do yourself a favor and just get a used 30-30...similar ballistics and usually more accurate... but no cheap combloc ammo.

FWIW. Ruger has released a 7.62x39 bolt, that uses Mini 30 mags. Seem pretty reasonably priced.

Before C-mags were bought out they made extremely good magazines that held 29 rounds of 7.62X39 and fed totally reliably. I have 6 and won't sell any = don't even ask.

(I just traded away 2k rounds.)

If you're looking for an inexpensive but reliable 7.62x39 in an AR pattern- check out palmetto state. Can get something less than $800. Otherwise, it's gonna cost upwards of $1500 to get a reliable AR patterned rifle that shoots that caliber.
