I've done a few long range shoots in the Platte, SD area over the past few years. The range below had targets from 400 to 1200 yards. I shot my Remington 700 in .308 Win at this range until it ran out of steam. There is a spot to the left ( out of the photo ) that you can shoot a mile (1600 meters). I shot a 50 BMG at the mile target.
If you get the opportunity to do so, I recommend practicing long range shots. For me, shooting these longer ranges at quasi-unknown distances was pretty humbling. For instance, with .308 I had my elevation turret cranked to its limit and (even a small amount of wind) at 800 yards sometimes held a wind hold that was at the edge of the reticle in order to hit the target...

The 338LM I sold oldman was a sweet capable rifle I always wanted, but after a few shots, that recoil went right down my back. The savage 338LM I had before the RPR was brutal on the body. A bit lighter than the RPR. IF I do get another rifle, it would be for beyond 1000 yards but up to 1 mile. Have shot 308 and my past 338LM out to 1000 yards already with success. Still would like to try a 1 mile shot. Thats what the 338LM was for. This is still a whim, checking things out. May not do it at all with my back issues.
