FTF on 458 Socom AR

Postby Scratch on Thu Nov 18, 2021 3:43 pm

My brother just put together an AR in 458 Socom but it's having problems feeding flat nosed bullets from the magazine. It strips the round out of the mag but it gets jammed at like a 30 degree angle and won't go in the chamber. It's like the feed ramp needs to be longer maybe...? Slowly letting the bolt carrier go does grab a round and

I'm assuming flat nosed bullets are known to have feeding issues like some HP's? he doesn't have any thing else to try right now but I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone else has any ideas in the mean time.

Yes, flat profile bullets can cause problems with feeding.

Are these factory rounds or handloads?

Factory rifle or home build?

Factory magazines for the cartridge?

If handloads, changing COAL would be my first step.

The first place to go would be the manufacturer of the upper then, especially if it’s factory ammo.

Take pics of everything, especially of the malfunctions.

If everything is factory, it should work- with flat meplat big bore bolt guns, the usual suspect is the feed rails. The flat meplat bullets made some otherwise reliable rifles not feed.

Were did he get the upper from? Have heard trommix is the best for that caliber. Other manufacturers seem to have some issues.
