Home Defense Shot gun

Postby LarryP on Sat Jul 27, 2024 3:10 pm

Looking to buy a shot gun for home use Or put a new shorter barrel on my 870 shot gun. What's the shortest barrel I can use in Minn?

As the Mossberg Shockwave is not a long gun, it has a 14.375" barrel.
A 'traditional' shotgun, with a full stock, capable of being shoulder fired, requires an 18" barrel, unless it's a Class III weapon.

If you put one on your 870, 18.5 would be your typical shortest. If you cut your own… know where to measure from and have an accurate measurement device.

I just picked up a Stoeger Condor Out Back over under. 20” barrel makes it the same overall length of an 18” home defense pump shotgun. Got it to go with Stoeger coach side by side.

And don't forget that there's a minimum overall length as well.

I got to try out a Mossberg Shockwave (pistol grip shotgun) 12 gauge and it was a VERY unpleasant experience. I don't think I'd do it again without gloves. I wouldn't recommend it for anything but that's just me. I mean you could put a laser sight on the thing, it had an under barrel picatinny rail, man-up to face the awful recoil, and be happy with it. Or maybe shoot reduced loads. Or shoot mini shells...Defender Tactical makes an adapter to let you shoot full size or mini shells interchangeably.

I wouldn’t suggest one of those at all. When I had mine, it was uncomfortable, awkward to shoot, too much recoil, and hard to keep steady. If you’re looking for a HD shotgun, I’d get a regular stock, not with a pistol grip, with the shortest dimensions you can, 18.5” barrel and 26” overall length.

Personally, I’d go with an 10.5” AR pistol in 5.56 though for HD.

I put one of these on mine. Works fairly good.

Go with 300 black out instead of 5.56. Bullet won't travel as far. Shoot a subsonic round for just around the house. Hornady 190 subs is like a pistol round. Get a semi auto with a brace for close quarters inside the house with a 10 or 12 inch barrel. allot easier to swing around the house.

I'm not sure about that. The Box of Truth did some test/ comparisons between various rounds.

As I recall, the 230gr 45 ACP went through more sheetrock walls than did the 55gr 5.56

Most any rifle round can go through multiple rooms and end up in the neighbors house.
Pistols are only a bit better.
#4 Buck is said to be good.

The Box of truth, I have not looked at it for years, Going to look it over again.

From the tests I saw, pretty much anything besides birdshot goes through multiple walls. The thing I like about 5.56 is that it breaks apart faster. So the pieces that do go into the neighbors house hopefully are smaller fragments rather than larger pieces.

I’m still trying to find the perfect HD solution but from what I’ve seen, 5.56 is the best mix.

I’ll be checking out these links to see if anything has changed recently.
