Good place to have barrel chopped

Postby Bearcatrp on Tue Sep 09, 2025 5:40 pm

Have a savage 10 FCP in 308 with a 24 inch barrel. Want the barrel chopped down to a 20 inches. What gun shop is good to go to? Thanks

Add me to the list for a good place / person to go to. I will need a barrel replacement done in the future.

Try asking silencercentral.com. I'm pretty sure when I asked them a while back about it they said it wasn't a problem to add a bbl cut along with a threading job. They've threaded a couple barrels for me that turned out great, although one got misplaced in their warehouse or something and took longer than it should have to get back to me. They seem to be at most of the bigger shows so you can drop the gun off there, do the paperwork, and they'll mail it back to you.

good luck!

Hoping to find someone local. Sioux falls is to far for me. I have not contacted them about cutting a barrel but they do threading from what I have read.

Depending on your location, I would suggest Odenthal Gunsmithing just off I35 on Lakeville/Prior Lake border. Or Laibs Gunsmithing in Spicer, MN. I have used both and been very satisfied with their work. Of course there is always Ahlmann's in Morristown but my experience with them was not so great. Just my two cents...

Will check out the spicer place as that’s the closest for me. Thanks for the suggestion

Truth be told, if all I wanted was to shorten a savage barrel (no threading, etc.) I’d buy a crowning tool from Brownells and making sure I was over 16” just take a hacksaw to it and recrown it myself.

Of course if it’s been shot a lot, I’d take the chamber end off and rechamber the thing, but that’s probably more cash than just buying a new savage barrel. The savage barrel nut system makes working on them relatively easy.

Thanks for the suggestions. Dropped it off at the spicer shop today. $150 to take 4 inches off. Am hoping it won’t affect my pet load I have for this rifles.

Got it to the range. Still shooting cloverleafs at 100 yards so seems to a good job done. Time will tell though.
