I think for optical reasons a multiplier of 4 is the highest anyone makes maybe only 3.

The Leupold is absolutely fine for the 30-06.

For the varmint scope, I would be looking at this one

http://cgi.ebay.com/NIKON-MONARCH-6-24X ... 7C294%3A50

Side focus, and high/low profile turret knobs. Not the best glass in the world but pretty darn close for the money.
Don't exclude the Gunstop for scopes, Larry has a good selection in a bit of a messy stack behind the counter. I don't remember paying $500 for my 6-24 Monarch over there.
If you're going to be developing loads, you're gonna be doing a lot of shooting so your scope mount and rings will be very important. My Monarch on my varmintrifle sits in standard Leupold rings and has worked itself loose once, resulting in pretty ugly marks on the scope. I haven't replaced them yet, and I don't really have any experience with other brands. I've heard very good things about Badger Ordnance (very spendy), Warne and Burris but I'm sure that more accomplished riflemen than me can chime in on this.

I've heard that these are very good for the money.

They look sweet and the price is not bad at all. Thank you, Joe, I may just order a pair.

Besides the Badgers, Seekings Precision, and Tally have a good following. Tally’s are light and affordable. Lightweights can be found on sale at midway for $30 a couple times a year.

Well I went out over my lunch break and got the Leupold VX-II 3x9 for the .30-06, the varmint scope is going to have to wait until uncle Sam actually gives me my money back (and I get a varmint rifle...). It's going to be interesting to me for adjustment, (at least for 3 minutes until I get used to it) as the rest of my scopes (all 2 of them) are adjusted in 1/4 MOA increments, and this one is 2 MOA increments. The glass itself is crystal clear and bright, and I can't wait to get this baby to the range. I'll have it mounted by the end of the weekend, and will have to beg Vlad to let me be a guest on a range trip in the near future.

Ya hear that Vlad? Please please please please please please please please please please please please please please etc. etc.

I thought that ALL Leupold VX were 1/4, with maybe the exception of the big (24x+) Target ones which can be ordered with 1/8................... :?

Unless someone sent it to the custom shop it should be 1/4 MOA. You should send it in and get it changed to MIL. EVERYONE knows Mil is better than MOA. :didntdoit: :didntdoit: :didntdoit: :blah: :blah: :blah:

Pretty sure, I'll check later and get back to you. Were there some older models that had the 2moa adjustments? Now I'M confused....... :?

Hope I didn't buy a counterfeit.......

I've got a Rolex Submariner that you can buy for $500.........

(Some of the "older" scopes that the Mil used were 1 moa, it may have a 2 moa dot in the reticle, but even that would be a bad scope..... )

I'll write you a check for the watch.........

As far as the scope, no dot, duplex reticle. I'll figure it out later and post. Hope I don't have to use a whole lot of these  but the way it's looking either way my future posting on this one is going to contain a couple.

I pretty much agree with everything in the previous posts, including a fixed x scope, except the two scopes for a platform....You build a platform to do a specific task.................

.

+1

When you try to make something do multiple tasks, you usually get a mediocre result at every task. When you try to make something single-task specific, you can get better results.

Or, to put it another way, "Jack of all trades, master of none," like many sayings, has a large grain of truth in it.....

I use fixed 4x scopes on my hunting rifles that are scoped. I have a fixed 10x right now on my BMG. I have a variable higher-powered scope with AO and target knobs on my .308.

There is no "holy grail" of scopes. You are always going to give something up to get something, be it weight, clarity, field of view, eye-box, eye relief, exit pupil, light gathering, power.....
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

Allright...... Here it comes......... get ready..........

          As it turns out, It's not 2MOA, I'm simply confused.

Let's see if this makes sense to any of you veteran rifle folks out there....
It is a Leupold Vari xii c. I don't know how I confused it but I did. That's neither here nor there as the deal is done now, and I have to live with my purchase (unless it's defective). The turrets are labelled with the MOA adjustments in 1/2 MOA increments, but they don't "click" they have a smooth but firm travel. The glass is very crisp, much clearer than the one I have on my rifle now, and the eye relief is more forgiving so as long as it holds zero and can be adjusted............

This is what confused me
