A "Serious" .22 LR

Postby Pat on Sat May 16, 2009 12:35 am

Am doing my darnedest to talk myself out of buying some variant of Volquartsen .22 LR.

I had a Remington Nylon 66 as a kid, and more recently a Ruger 10/22, but I would really like to see what a .22 LR long gun could do at 50 to 100 yards, with some really nice glass mounted on top.

Should I be looking at something in .17 HMR caliber instead? Ammo is just so darned expensive of late, that I hate to burn up anything larger than .22 LR.

I really like my Marlin 7000s, I'm unsure about whether Marlin still makes them, might have to search the pawn market, but it's worth it.

Great now I have to add another one to the "must own" list. I did not even know about these until I looked them up based on your post. These look sweet.

If you are looking for a .22 LR at a great price ($400) that is very accurate check out the Savage Mark II.

I have a CZ 452 that will shoot. Not too expensive either.
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

Well I happen to own 2 pretty spendy Rimfires, both 10/22 based

The 22LR is a stainless Ruger action with a Volquartsen SS fluted/comped barrel, all Power Custom titanium action parts, Volquartsen thumbhole stock (made by McMilan)
I had a 6.5-20 VX3 Target scope on it for awhile, 50 yards its shoots one “RAGGED” hole with ok ammo like Wolf match grade, when it gets really freaky is when you put some high end Eley in it, simply insane. Just blasting with cheap Remington golden bullet bulk stuff it will still shoot very well.

My other toy is a Ruger action with a Volquartsen Carbon THM barrel on it, this one is chambered in 17 mach 2. This is one of my favorite firearms, the M2 is a blast, packs tons of punch and is deadly accurate, in a semi auto its just too much fun for words. I slapped this rig in a Predator Raptor stock, I take it out EVERY TIME I go shooting. I buy the Remington (made by Eley) ammo of the net and can almost always find it for $3.60 or so per 50, making it a heck of allot cheaper than my HMR’s..

In the end I vote 17 M2 it will shoot almost if not as accurate as match grade 22lr, packs much better ballistics and is 1/3 the cost of HMR and about the 1/3 of the cost of match grade 22lr, it’s a real bang for the buck. I’ve dispatched countless rabbits, crows, ground hogs, squirrels coons…. It’s a super flat shooting round, an inch high at 25 and just about dead on till 120 or so.

What a $2000 10/22 looks like

The Volquartsen Mach2, it now wears much nicer Weaver Classic Extreme 2.5-10X –50mm IR sidefocus glass

for budjet gun I vote Marlin HMR or HM2

$190 rifle marlin 917VR HMR, $90 Barska 8-32X –50mm scope

Image
100 yard group (pretty typical) and yes that’s a 1” center dot, not bad for a sub $300 rig

For offhand bunny and squirrel shooting, nothing beats my 1946 Marlin 39A but I'm from the opinion that putting a scope on a levergun is blasphemy.
The Savage 93R is an accurate little gun in 17HMR. Around 1 MOA at 100 yds if it's not too windy. I bought mine at Cabelas in a package with a pretty good scope for under $300. Truth is that I don't shoot it nearly as much as any of my 22's.
I have a 10/22 that I pimped a couple of months ago with a green mountain barrel and a Boyts' stock. That one prints tiny groups now but is very heavy and impractical in the field

I think if I wanted a good looking, accurate .22 that would do pretty much everything, I would go with the CZ 452 too. I have never heard a bad word about those and they look classy.

You want serious? How about a Winchester 52?

Winchester 52, Pre, " A " Mod, with "A" rear sights, $900.00

mmmmm CZ 452.... want!

Also, the CMP sells junior Savage MKII for under $230. An aftermarket adult sized stock shouldn't be too hard to find.

My 10/22 has a Boyds Blaster stock, A&B bull barrel, Volquartsen internals, Nikon Monarch on top. It will cut a ragged hole all day long and i KNOW it's not the geezer squeezing the trigger!

Love to take into the woods, the critters don't have a prayer. If I can get the glass on 'em, they fall down.

HOWEVER, at the end of the day, that 8.6lbs feels a whole lot heavier than I like.

Chatted with my gunsmith and he said, "what's the prob? Build another, lighter gun!" God, I love that guy! :D

However, after seeing what Ragged has put together I can see that I'll actually HAVE to build TWO new ones! Is this a great country, or what!?

Thanks, Ragged, I owe ya one.
Fortunately, I wasn't cursed with the need to be liked.
