Heavy metal rifles

I've been wondering this for a bit, what caliber is used as a heavy metal rifle? I know .308 is used, but can a AK47 user compete? I have a feeling that the term "heavy metal" means the iron targets need to be knocked over with a high caliber, but I don't know if the 7.62x39 could properly do this.

Heavier bullets maybe? 154gr instead of 122? I thought there was a caliber minimum you need to show up with.

I found this ... http://www.uspsa.org/rules/2010MultiGunRules.pdf ... check out appendix A4 ... says minimum caliber .308 and minimum 320pf ... under "multi-gun" ... in another column, for minimum caliber, it says "no" ... possibly a misprint ... who knows.

No clue if anyone's following that, to the letter. Sounds like they can do whatever they want. So I reckon ya'd hafta go on a match-by-match basis.

That said, I'd be very surprised if anything .308+ dia. and 320pf+ would not be considered "heavy metal" by anyone.

Looks like a 123gr 7.62x39 would hafta go over 2,600fps. You can do that, I reckon that's "heavy metal". I wouldn't think that'd be possible ... but I really don't know, fer sure.

No clue what other cartridge ya'd care to try, to meet that requirement. Probly cost more in brass/ammo, at the very least.

We need a group of like 5 guys to bring Mosin Nagants, NEF single shots, and SAA style revolvers.

Get the right five guys and you could really shame some of the other competitors.

well, yes, the right 5 guys would look like douche nozzels.

But right for that, and right for not finishing last are not the same subsets.

I'm probably in the douche nozzel subset.

I heard of people using an AK47, though I think it was probably the RPK variant or a PSL.

I shot one of these matches in PA with some buddies. 1911s in 45acp. 870 pumps, M1a and M1 Garand. Made all the poodle shooters flinch 8-)

Wow, I had a total brain fart.. I thought this shooting class was for assault carbines in 30cal and above, in a "shoot and move" scenario to engage targets in varied distance.. I didn't figure it was another version of 3 gun.
Maybe I should stop drinking Tequila till 4 in the morning! After reading a bit into it, and checking the all powerful youtube, I feel a bit sheepish on suggesting an AK.
