Ruger 10/22...

Postby gun_fan111 on Sat Aug 16, 2014 9:22 am

I always thought it was a slow "vol" followed by a fast "quartsen" :)
Did you just buy that beautiful firearm, or are you trying to sell that piece of crap?

Yeah, but not in a dirty way. It's a trigger, not hooker instructions.

Marlin's quality appears to have suffered quite a bit over the last few years, if you spend any time at rimfirecentral.com or at marlinowners.com. Marlin is not a direction I would go based on current reputation, however rimfires for me are nothing more than a hobby and I like to tinker. Rugers have always met my expectations and I've always been able to tinker them into a rifle that will outshoot most rimfires. No need for me to step outside that box.

YMMV

Interesting article about Marlin's troubles:

I have always like Ruger as a company. They seem to try to make firearms that the shooting public wants and needs.

Interesting, and about what I suspected. The incompetence of Freedom Group certainly did destroy the reputations of some well-known, respected, time-honored brands. Personally, I'd still stay away from those brands for awhile, until they demonstrate a commitment to the long term quality consistent with their history or they separate themselves from the Freedom Group shadow.

Anything left on that shooting iron that came from the Ruger factory?

We have the one stock 10/22.

If I was going to get another I think I would build it from parts and have a threaded barrel and receiver.

On one of my 10-22s I sent the bolt in to Que's Boltworks https://sites.google.com/site/quesplace/ to have it reworked. He trues the face, sets the headspace, radiuses the edges and puts in a Volquartsen extractor. I added a Kidd recoil handle, spring and rod for less binding. HUGE improvement in smoothness, but as good as that was, getting a whole new Kidd bolt with those same recoil parts was amazing. That rifle runs like a sewing machine. Very satisfying build.

nope.. you would be hard pressed to find any ruger parts on there.. but its a fun shooter.. it's been fun customizing it to where it is. but it's a 22, and it does what i ask it too.

Well the VQ bolt handle and spring assembly didn't work. I tried for several hours but once in, it would bind terribly. I contacted VQ and Scott told me he had other people with the same problem with the 50th anniversary model for some reason. He wanted me to send in the whole rifle but that seemed over the top. I returned the part for a refund.

I odored a Kidd bolt and spring assembly. It does not have a captive spring and comes with 3 different spring weights. I am working on getting the Archangel stock to fit. It binds somewhere, maybe due to the VQ trigger group.

I may get a bipod for it since having only 1 leg puts me at a disadvantage when shooting for accuracy.

I like their guns, but dislike their history of supporting magazine capacity limits.

When it comes to 10/22 stuff Kidd is about the best you can get. VQ makes some very nice products too but if there is a Kidd product available that would be my choice. I would love to have a Kidd barreled action. His barrels are tack drivers. Out of the box, the 10/22 can be made into a great shooter for very little money, with that and their general reliability that makes them so popular. The other major milestone for the Ruger 10/22 is the Ruger BX25 magazine.
