At that point, you'd need same caliber backups, so you'd really need FOUR.

If the OP is anywhere near the Duluth area, I saw a set up that would pretty much meet his stated needs.

I don't remember if it was Fisherman's Corner, Superior Shooters Supply, or Gander Mountain (odds are in the order stated) but there was a Savage rifle package on the used rack for a mere $399 in 7mm/08. It was blued with the plastic stock and hardly looked used. I seriously considered buying it but already have more 7mm/08s than I really need.

The 7mm/08 would do all the 308 will do though ammo choices are not as varied, widespread, nor cheap as 308. It is a great cartridge and is probably my second favorite deer round. I would have put in my original choice except for the ammo issues, if you will. If it is there the next time I go back, I just might have to buy it.

Can't buy 7mm-08 ammo or Savage scope rings at Cub foods. Might as well just sign your own death warrant.

For you guys that run Savages, do you think the Accustock is worth the added price?

Yea but their bacon is tough enough you can use it to strap a scope on to any platform.

Oh boy, just went down the 6.5 creedmore rabbit hole. There seems to be a lot of pluses to this caliber, but it looks like double lung shot would be key on Elk, would plan on anything bigger than that with 6.5. Doesn't pass the Cub food test though. ;)

Remember the old holiday sports and grocery store on 694? They had liquor a gun store and grocery all under one roof plus a McDonald's if I remember right.

Then it changed to a gander. I bought 2 guns there for dirt cheap when they moved.
