deer rifle poll

Postby rugersol on Fri Jun 17, 2011 7:55 am

With the recent interest in deer rifles, I thought it'd be interesting to see how the groups of calibers shake out.

I'm sure more than a few folks'll take exception with how I grouped 'em. Image

I listed the pistol calibers fer guys who like 'em in rifles so-chambered ... obviously, there's more pistol calibers not otherwise typically available in such rifles.

I actually grouped the calibers before writing this ... this is how the groups ended up ...

".30-06" - step below the magnums, .30+ but not big thumpers
".30-30" - lever, but not the big thumpers
"slugs" - and the big thumpers
".270" - long-action (standard) sub-.30, but not the magnums
"magnums" - duh
"light" - not by any means "light" fer deer ... more than adequate, actually ... jest lighter than most everything 'sept the ".30-30" group
"pistol-caliber" - why not?

I've never shot a .25-06, so I'm not sure how they handle ... I'd expect somewhat light recoil, depending on the load, 'course ... but it seemed right to put it where I did.

I did not vote for a one becuae I think it depends where you hunt. If I was after one of those deep in the woods or swamp bucks and I expected to shoot under 100 yards I would pick either the 30-30 or a slug gun. If I was back in WI hunting the Xmas tree farms I'd go for the 30-06 or 270.

I personally don't think there are many or any conditions in the US that require the magnum stuff for deer, moose maybe but not deer.

I jest tried editing the poll to allow 2 different votes ... it still don't give me the option to pick another ... YMMV. Image

I don't see any rifles listed in that poll, only calibers and gauges.

lol WTH does a 7mag have to do with a 338mag other than some B/S marketing name on the end, there is a solid 25-35% difference in energy between the two!

Where is MN but, Minnesota does have a few different types of ground to cover, some places thick as all heck other wide open. On the other hand i believe we only have one type of deer.
