6 Long Guns - What do I have?

Postby lenny7 on Thu Sep 17, 2009 11:56 pm

I'm helping my old boss dispose of a few long guns for his neighbor. I, of course, get first crack at them but first I need to figure out what we have. I have not inspected these closely yet. All of the guns look old and have various scratches, dings, rust, etc. They're not in great shape but they're not in horrible shape either. I'm interested in hearing what you might know about these, and if there are any interesting pieces.

We have:

Guns 1 & 2:

1. J Stevens Arms Company "Marksman"
.22 Long Rifle, lever action break-barrel

2. Savage Model 220A
.410 break-barrel with a 3" chamber

Guns 3 & 4:

3. Remington Model 510
"The Target Master"
.22 SH, L, & LR, bolt-action, single shot, smooth bore

4. Winchester Model 03
.22 cal Automatic
loads on the side of the stock. Below the barrel, past the forearm is some sort of plunging mechanism. Not sure what it's for.

Guns 5 & 6 are described here.

Sorry, I'm not entertaining any offers at this point. For now, consider them mine. I find each of them interesting for one reason or another.

If you're describing the part I think you are, try pushing that thing towards the rear while watching the bolt... If the .22s are set up like the centerfire models of that ilk, you should even be able to use it as a bolt hold open by giving it about 1/4 twist when it's all the way back.

IIRC, the 03 with that caliber designation was meant for goofy ammo: both Remington and Winchester had trouble getting their early .22 semiautos to work with the standard LR ammo of the time and came up with new cartridges to address the issue. After the LR ammo got better, the later Model 63 was chambered for it. Just going off what I recall off the top of my head, so take that last bit with a grain of salt.

Thanks for your input. I did some googling and you're right. The Winchester Model 03 uses was a .22 Winchester Automatic

That Savage .410 sure is nifty.

My son put a claim on that one already.
I'd like to buy them all. I just need to figure out a fair price for them.

A gentlemen I deal with once in a while for work, who does estate sales and property appraisals says that according to his blue book, guns are selling for right at, if not just a bit above retail blue book prices.

Looks like the cheapest form of the blue book is $35.00. Would be nice if somebody had a book to at least give a benchmark. Getting them "appraised" at a gun shop will surely give mixed reviews.

Anyway, this isn't a special find, or idea, as everyone knows about the valuation books. But here's the link anyway:

I've got the 08 Blue Book on my laptop at home, but after work I'm bugging out for the weekend.

The Henn Co Libraries should all have the newest.

Sadly the Henn Co libraries have 1 copy of the 2009 blue book, and 1 copy only. Currently a 5 person waiting list on it too.

Go to gunbroker.com, do a search on completed auctions with bids on them, and see where the bids stop. May not be the best method, but beats guessing.

They used to keep one in the non-circulating reference sections.

<edit> - yeah the 2009 is available in the reference sections of Brookdale, Ridgedale, and Southdale.

And the 2006 edition is available for checkout at Southdale. It should get you with 10-20% of the price.
