Appleseed for beginners.............

Postby hammAR on Sat Oct 24, 2009 12:56 pm

I and some others here are interested i shooting the Appleseed, so a bunch of questions...........

Is there some membership requirements?

Where does one find the Mn schedule?

Who to contact and register?

Understanding that the Mn version is just 25m, what would be the best rifle?

Where does one get shooting qualification information?

Where does one get practice targets?

Just how much equipment does one need?

and anything else that would be useful in preparation.............

and do not tell me to effen Google it, I want information and discussion from those that have experienced and shot it....

Since I haven't shot one (yet!), I'll just post the main web site address. It has clear answers to a number of your questions, in case you don't get any helpful answers here, or if anyone else is unaware of the web site.

I too would love to hear from those who have actually shot one, as I will definitely be going to (at least) one event in 2010. Particularly if anyone has any suggestions regarding what to bring that may not be on the list on the web site, or a particular type of item that is listed...

jgalt and VikesFan, I'm not really trying to be a smartass, I have read their web site, I have read the web site for the U S Marines too.......
theory and practice are different....
I want information and discussion from those that have experienced and shot it....

Examples:

They suggest shooting coat?
They suggest shooting mat?

regarding "shooting qualifications" with AQT:
What it the difference between - Quick and Dirty AQT and uses only 40 rounds instead of the full blown AQT with 50

regarding AQT targets:
What positions at what targets considering that all shooting was done at 25 meters and the targets were reduced to simulate 100, 200, 300, and 400 yards.

etc......again, I want information and discussion from those that have experienced and shot it.... ;)

Sorry I wasn't clear - I posted the address not for your sake (I was quite confident you already had it), but for those who might not be aware of it. And like I mentioned, I too want more info than is on their site and would love to hear from those who have any practical info that might help me be as well prepared as possible for when I do attend.

I have the same questions as you and more... For example, their list of items to bring mentions ideally 5 magazines. I'm sure the more I bring the happier I'll be, but as I only currently have one 10 rnd mag for my 22 and will need to buy more, what is the minimum I'll be happy with? For example, are there drills that require a specific number of rounds be ready to go, etc, etc, etc...?

I guess I'm 'piggybacking' on your post, not trying to reply directly to you... 8-)

No

U.S. schedule and registration links here: http://appleseedinfo.org/as_schedule2.php
Next one is next week in Hinckley
Next one listed is in June
I may host one on Fishing Opener in Elk River

hammAR wrote:Understanding that the Mn version is just 25m, what would be the best rifle?

An older 10/22 or a Marlin 795

hammAR wrote:Where does one get shooting qualification information?

Download and print here: http://ironat500.blogspot.com/2007/07/aqt-target.html
Buy here: http://www.fredsm14stocks.com/catalog/acc.asp
Instructions are printed on the targets.

o It really helps to have Tech Sights fitted to your rifle http://www.tech-sights.com/
o A GI Web sling like this one: http://www.e-gunparts.com/DisplayAd.asp ... erSKU=&MC= Note they are 1 1/4" wide and most sling swivels are 1" Good luck - it takes some searching
o Shooting mat or old carpet
o 5 magazines for your rifle
o 600-700 rounds
o Chair
o Lunch
o Whatever else you need to spend the whole day outside

Minimum you can get by with is 2. There are 2 stages that require a mag change. You load 2rds in one and 8 in the other. So, you could get by with one 10rd mag and one 7 in the case of the Marlin 795.

6 mags means you can get through an AQT exercise without reloading mags between stages and can use the time to decompress and re-focus for the next stage.

But this is for the hardcore - the first time I attended I used a bolt gun with a tube magazine.

jgalt, understood and acknowledged......

deanc, thanks for the info, it is a good place to start..............I'm sure that there will be lots more questions....and IF ou do get one set up in the early spring please let us know>

But in the mean time, regarding shooting qualifications and targets the web site says:

10 rounds Standing in 2 minutes - possible 50 points

10 rounds Standing to Seated in 50 seconds with a mag change (load 2 & 8 or if your rifle doesn't allow that load 5 & 5)
5 rounds per target - possible 50 points

10 rounds Standing to Prone in 60 seconds with a mag change (same as above)
3 on first target, 3 on second, and 4 on last - possible 50 points

10 rounds Slowfire Prone in 5 minutes. No mag change necessary
2 on first target, 2 on second, 3 on third, and 3 on last - Double the score on this stage for 100 possible points.

Total clean score would be 250 points.

Which targets do you shoot at in which position?
and for jgault, I see that he will have to buy at lease 1 mag for the reload exercise

This sounds like it could be fun.....

...got it..............those last two sets looked pretty small even at 25 m to be shooting at standing and sitting............ :P

however, one must go from standing to prone on the third set, so how many shots (2?) standing before transitioning to prone.....

10 rounds Standing to Prone in 60 seconds with a mag change (same as above)
3 on first target, 3 on second, and 4 on last - possible 50 points

no I have not shot an Appleseed event. Doubt I ever will.

What I HAVE done though is competed in John C Garand matchs, Over The Course (OTC), Service Rifle, CMP matchs, Winston P Wilson and MN Long Range match. I have also taken and completed the Army National Guard Squad designated Marksman instructor course.

Get a range book . You will want to work on recording all shots that you make. It will be to your benefit as the training progresses.

A decent spotting scope is invaluable. Kowa seems to be the standard.

Learn what bullet trace is and how to spot it.

Sight black. It will help you see the sights and targets that much better. Carbide works MUCH better than the spray can stuff.

Extra magazines. You will also want to find a single shot magazine if you can.

Shooting mat. I have a couple of old surplus parachute weapons cases. They roll up nice, have a nice heavy duck canvas and 1/2" felt inner-liner. Got em for $10 off Cheaper than dirt, but I can't find them there anymore.

Read up on Natural Point of aim.

Chances are if they are having you shoot at 25M, you will use the ALT-C target.

Fred's Book. If you shoot m14's, this is the place to find stocks to work on your bedding.

Learn how to use a military rifle sling...It's not just for carrying that iron around with. Get a cotton or leather sling. Forget that nylon. They slip.

A shooting mitt for your non-firing hand. It will be used to protect your hand in the sling. Even an old leather glove with the fingers cut off is better than nothing.

Chamber Block or Flag. Everyone on the line will thank you for this one.

My guess would be

10 rounds Standing in 2 minutes - the single large target

10 rounds Standing to Seated in 50 seconds with a mag change (load 2 & 8 or if your rifle doesn't allow that load 5 & 5)
5 rounds per target - the sheet with two targets

10 rounds Standing to Prone in 60 seconds with a mag change (same as above)
3 on first target, 3 on second, and 4 on last - the sheet with three targets

10 rounds Slowfire Prone in 5 minutes. No mag change necessary
2 on first target, 2 on second, 3 on third, and 3 on last - the four small targets

I have a Marlin 795 with some extra magazines and tech-sights you can borrow if you want to shoot one.
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.
