Need help finding a 308

Postby miked on Sat Nov 20, 2010 11:19 pm

Ok here is the preliminary info

- has to be a 308win
- barrel 18-20 inches (with a 1 in 10 preferred)
- bolt action/repeater (doesn’t mater weather internal or magazine)
- sub MOA accuracy (preferred)
- weigh under 7lbs
- reasonably priced

Reason for this rifle, it will be the only light bolt action gun I will have. I will use for a number for of things including hunting/recreation and other things.

The gun will be fitted with optics and will be the rifle I take to Texas in 8 weeks, and keep close at hand after that.

I have no real experience with light bolt guns, I do have extensive experience with a Remington 700 (love them) and black rifles.

So this is what I’ve been looking at

Remington Model 7
Savage Model 10 Scout
Savage Model 10 Precision Carbine – currently winning in my head
Weatherby Vanguard carbine (1 in 12 twist and 1.5 moa which is outside the above stuff but has been recommended by a friend)

So let me know if you have any experience with these or any other recommendations.

Thanks

Mike

If you are all ready familiar with Black rifles why not an AR-10?

No one will ever go wrong with a 700,7, or savage. Get what feels right. Don't rule out a 22" ADL Remington. Cheap but very accurate

I'd ferget about the Vanguard.

And I'd consider a Tikka. Bbl's probly 22in. ... but I don't believe it'd be a problem fer ya. And even then, IIRC, a cut 'n re-crown is one of the least expensive gunsmithing services.

Also, X-bolt. Ya could get a "micro", but I'd guess the LOP'd be a bit short.

I wouldn't rule this out for a hunting rifle.

Keeping a rig under 7 pounds rules out the Vanguard.

Here is another option, Browning A-bolt micro hunter. I went to the gun shop intending to buy a Rem. model 7 for my DW but ended up with the Browning after handling them both. I see Browning has the x-bolt version too.

I listed the X-Bolt, myself, 'cause I've had a few A-bolts ... all very good ... 'sept the last one ... that I got, AFTER the new X-bolts were out. The trigger was very less than "A-bolt-ish". The X-bolts I've handled seem to have better triggers than my best A-bolts.

That said, I've got a nice 7mm-08 A-bolt that I almost never shoot ... but wouldn't trade fer nothin'.

If you love the Rem700, why not the 700 SPS Tactical in .308?

That under 7 pounds thing pretty much makes any heavy contour barrel a no-go per his stated requirements.

Nice idea - what does it cost to knock down the barrel and recrown it? taking off 6 inches of the barrel would for sure lighten it up to under 7lbs and its one of the few that has a 1 in 10 twist.

When did the stop making the ADLs?

The savage is still leading the pack with the Remington in a close second due to needed modification - the Vangaurd is out for sure now. The A-bolts are nice but are still more pricey than either the Remington or Savage.

The tactical was a 20" barrel, but it is a heavy barrel. Couldn't find a weight with a quick search of Remington's site. Your post just made me think of it, was looking to pick one up for myself for deer hunting in WI but found a deal and went another route.

Edit: Found a site that claimed the Tactical at 7.5 lbs. dry. It is a 1 in 12 twist, but seen they have a new Tactical ACC-SD with a threaded barrel with the 1 and 10 twist.

I'd roll with a Savage 110 and call it good. If you could make do with a long action Marlin's XL-7 line of bolt guns are an outstanding value.

Savage NNN = long action
Savage NN = short action

All (almost all?) Savage .30" are 1/10 twist.
The Steven's branded Savage 10/110 will have a lighter stock and a matte metal finish (and a trigger "downgrade" that I like). Will be 22", chopping can be a DIY process with the same money invested in tools as one chop job (<$100), and then you can recrown any .30" any time.

http://www.remington.com/comparison.aspx

ok I'm going to start looking for this rifle for a few reasons -

1. know the system
2. can geek it out with all sorts of aftermarket parts and stocks later on
3. my dad said he would be will to chop and re-crown it for me (which he has done on other rifles but didn't think he was up for it) 8-)
4. the weight will be about 6.5lbs after chopping 6 inches off
5. has the 1 in 10 twist that i want to feed the match ammo I have
6 the over all length will be around 38-39 inches which is money and easy to pack
7. I will save the Savage scout model for next year but still REALLY like them and think a scout rifle is a great under rated tool - oh crap maybe I should just roll with that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

so if you see either one please let me know - as with everything in my life this is subject to change at any moment

Thanks for all you input, I never even saw this rifle when searching on my own.
