All-around .308 rifle

Postby JoeH on Tue Nov 30, 2010 10:33 am

I'm interested in getting a do-it-all rifle in .308 (7.62 x 51mm). Now I understand that in a perfect world I would have several guns that each fit their intended use more precisely than a do-it-all rifle. Yet, if I were to buy one rifle, what should it be?

Primary use: Punching paper from 100 to 600 yards
Potential use: Deer hunting (short walks, from a stand, Minnesota)
3-Gun (heavy metal)
F-Class
TEOTWAWKI MBR

I've been thinking about a bolt gun but that basically eliminates 3-Gun. What say you? FAL? M1A? AR-10?

Thanks,

Joe

M1A. Scout Squad to be specific.

But that's not based off of any rational empirical scale. It's just cause I *really* like mine. It meets the primary and first two secondary needs perfectly, and I have no idea what the final two are.

But you can also put a bipod on it!!

CETME for cheap / PTR-91 if you're made of money. i really like the G3 platform and for all around, i don't think you can get much better. for longer rnage or more accurate on the bench you want an accurized top shelf bolt gun, but if you're doing 3-gun and having fun the semi-auto is a must.

and hell, if you can't put down a trophy buck with 20 rounds of .308 you shouldn't be in the woods in the first place :P

I really wanted a g3 until I finally got to handle a ptr..... They run and are accurate... but WRECK brass like no ones business. I use a FAL for 3-gun, but it won't give you the accuracy a AR-10 will, and it's heavy as hell. For the money an ar-10 is the way to go IMHO.

JoeH, I have this one in the .308 and the .260 uppers, I also have Remington 700P in .308 (not really a carrying around the woods rifle). You can try either one of them to check them out, just let me know.

Hammar and Westberg- That may be the crème de la crème but it is far more money than I choose to spend on firearms.

Saiga .308 probably worth mentioning as well...

Easy answer, I would just get a DPMS LR-308, $1100, it will work great and you can always add the trick parts as you go if you feel the need. They are about 1/3 of the price of the JP, you could add a PRS stock, Geissele trigger and a Krieger barrel and still be $1500 less than the JP but best of all you could do it over a span of time. The Remington R25 line is simply a camo dipped DPMS, they shoot just as well but you're paying for the finish and a little bit for the name.

I'm pretty sure that rifle would be absolutely horrible to use for F-Class, honestly I would be pretty surprised if a run of the mill Saiga could keep 20 rounds on paper @ 600

That's a vast oversimplification of the amazing performance enhancements of the Remington. Image

Now what'd I do with that chart?! ...

I'd go AR10. You could scratch build and save a few bucks, the JP stuff is WAY over priced and they are a real pain to deal with. Otherwise there are a number of nice manufactures that build a good gun. With two uppers you could have a shorty for 3 gun and a heavy for f-class.

It would be on paper... not much better than that... but it would be on paper... Another great perk of the Saiga, is that it's poor ergonomics make it equally ill-suited to 3-gun.....
