Does anyone know where the Fleet Farm AKs are sourced? I was at the one up North off of 169 today and saw they had standard stock AK-47 variants for $439 and folders for $469. Are they Romys, Bulgys or Chinese? Looking for a 47 myself.

Last one I heard of someone picking one up from Fleet Farm was a Century build / Romy.

I thought that they were Romaks WASR 10's but I could be wrong.

Hmmm... good price. Though, I've heard mixed reviews of the Romys. Aren't the WSAR 10's the ones what have had the magazine receiver enlarged from the 10rd single stack standard? I hear the Romy's are reliable, but not so great on accuracy and fit/finish. Anyhow, sorry for the thread hijack and thanks for the info!

Yes, there have been issue's. I would suggest contacting Squib Joe if you are looking for a 47 or 74.

For a little more hijack, while at the MWCA show yesterday, I looked at a Century Tantal clone at the Essential Arms table. While I'm hesitant to touch anything cobbled together by the Century monkeys (I bought one of their G3's a few years back that was utter junk), I have heard that, for the most part, their AK's were decent.

And I really want a Tantal...

But, Essential did have a number of 5.45 AK's, in various flavors.

And a handful of LMT ARs... I managed to restrain myself :) Barely.

I bought a WASR 10 from FF. It has no problems with feed. As I understand it the problem was that the receiver didn't have the dimples on ether side of the mag opening. When they enlarged the magazine opening for double stack mags, they didn't allocate for that. The dimples keep the magazine in position and kept it from slopping around side to side, causing feed/jam issues.
On the new ones they fixed it by welding a couple of inserts inside the receiver on either side of the mag port. That seems to work because I've had not issues with it.
As for form, fit and accuracy it's not an AR-15. But you can run over it and it would still work. I can't say that about my AR's.

Good to know. I was unaware they had addressed this issue with inserts. My just have to run over there again and take a closer look. Thanks! I haven't seen a ton of used WSAR 10s for sale, so people must be keeping them after they buy them (or just melting them down in disgust).

My WASR 10 has been nothing but reliable, and I must say it is pretty darn accurate too.

I know that some of the Century guns are built fairly well, but those are typically the ones Century contracts out to have built by other firms. The problem is, Century bounces things around so two of the same model rifle might be made by different contractors depending on who they had a deal with at the time. The earlier Yugoslavian M-70 underfolders were built very well, but they were contracted out.

One thing to remember about Romanian WASR-2's (and WASR series rifles in general) is that they have chrome lined barrels, in my opinion a necessity if you are using cheap corrosive surplus ammo (which is really the main reason to get a 74). That feature is something you just don't get without stepping up to double the price for an Arsenal, so that's always a thing to consider since the other options use unlined US made barrels.

They gots Romys. Take your time looking through their inventory of the wasr's. You're not paying for fit and finish, so if the parts fit snug and nothing rattles besides the gas piston, then that's about all you can expect. Century's mag wells have been getting better, but put a fit test on your checklist. I wouldn't take the canted sight warning all too seriously since it's one of the more fixable wasr woes. Great gun for the money. Enjoy!
