Advice needed for trap gun

Postby Stradawhovious on Tue Aug 23, 2011 8:09 am

I may have been bitten by another addiction the other day......

I went trap shooting for the first time in a decade, and couldn't get enough of it. I'm now looking for an over under for under a grand (preferrably in the $500 range) that doesn't suck.

I realize that this is a limited budget for such a toy, but it is what it is. When the wife sees this... (and she will see it) the budget will probably fall again.

I would also like to know how to get into the sport a little more. Protocol, rules, regs etc. etc. etc. If there is anywhere you seasoned folks could direct me it would be great.

ETA... I realize this sport can just as easily be done with the Model 12 pump or western field pump I have, but I would prefer an OU shotty. I've wanted one for a while now, seems like the time to research it.

Find yourself an old wingmaster.
-Get a rope Tuco.

+1. Big bonus if you can find one with a 32" barrel and a fixed choke.

Save money and invest in O/U down the road. Need closer to a g-note to get into a good O/U that the wood to metal fit isn't crap.

Well, I already have a Winchester Model 12 that fits this description......

Well, 30" barrel not 32", but close.

Funny... That's what I sent him via PM. It wasn't good enough for him.

I think Strad should just post what he wants, so he can receive validation on his choice.

And give us a preview of what will be for sale next spring.

Nice. Don't you have some rights to violate?

Besides, how was it not good enough for me? I already have something that basically fits that description in that model 12. Is it good enough to get into the sport? Sure! I was just looking for options and advice on a new toy because i want it..... not because I feel I need it. If I can't get anything decent for under a grand, that's fine...... but how is a guy to know unless he asks?

Shouldn't get in my way, I can just wait until I get some money.

My advice would be to chill and just make do with what you have for now. I got really hot on trap a couple years ago to the point where I was looking at shotguns with prices equal to several mortgage payments in addition to shotshell reloading setups. Shortly thereafter my interest faded and I haven't shot trap since (although I'd like to).

Have you tried the action on an old Wingmaster? It's slick, very slick. The fit and finish of the internals and moving parts is what makes it a Wingmaster. I've got a Wingmaster and a 97' Express (The last year with a metal trigger group, now sold as the police magnum). They don't compare.

Use that for a while. Sell some ****, sell you body whatever, get some $ and look at a Ruger Red-label if you want a bankvault lockup. Buy a BT-99 if you want a straight up trap gun.

I will probably be interested in whichever you end up selling down the road.

No problem. If you want a semi-auto, find an older Rem1100 or a really old Rem Mod. 58 Sportsman. (the later can be very reasonable if it's the more common 2 3/4" gun.)

But I don't want a semi auto.

I want an over under.

Try to keep up.

Don't laugh!

Seriously, I saw a write-up recently on this!

If yer lookin' fer a new trap-only gun, under $500, I'd guess this is worth a look!

If it was me, I'd jest use the Winchester ... at least 'til ya think it's what's holdin' ya back! Image

Most important thing is that is comes up fer ya, good!
