AR Optics

Postby qualcorp on Mon Feb 13, 2012 3:58 pm

Optic set up for AR-15, 16" barrel. I have my 20" riffle scoped and is just fine, however looking for something quicker and more versatile for the 16" riffle. Leaning toward Holographic Sight w magnifier. I have resigned to the fact that I will be spending around $1000.00. That said I don't want to choose outdated technology that isn't going to perform for me, ending up in market place for a fraction the price paid. I can imagine all of you have your personal favorites, brands, styles and attributes. Please advise.

what do you want to do with it?

Long distance? SD? 3-gun? 300+? 300 or less?

Do you have a particular ammo you want to use?

IMO.

0-300 Aimpoint M4s or EOTech EXPS 2-0
50-600 Trijicon ACOG or any decent 3-9x (NightForce, Leupold, Nikon, Trijicon, Vortex I'm probably forgetting some)
600+ any decent 5-25ish power

If you want to spend $1000 go right ahead, if you would like to spend under $400 the Burris MTAC is a really nice piece of glass. True 1-4X with a really nice IR. The more I shoot it, the more I like it. Off the bench I can make easy hits on 5" steel plates at 400 yards. Really suprised me how easy it is to shoot at longer ranges only being 4x. A lot of 3-gunners preffer it to the 2x the price, XTR's. Another option for you is Sightron will be coming out with a 1-7x scope. Not sure if I care for the recticle (it's just a duplex with an illuminated dot), but Sightron is well known for building "bang for your buck" optics.

Take a loook here. I think that Bushnell is going to hit it out of the park with the new line and this is not cheap Chinese Glass, Optics are from Japan, soon to be made in the USA.

There are several CQB Suitable Scopes on the page - I think that the differences are the Reticle Patterns and MIL/MIL or MOA Style Scopes.

Is right.....$1400. Looks like a really nice scope, but I'm not sure how many you will see out there with them at that price. Now they are competing with the Swaro 1-6.

Leaning toward Holographic Sight with magnifier, any experience with these? Other 'red dots' I have tried seem like the dot is to large at any distance.

You start with a Holosight (about $400) the mount (about $250) and the Magnfier (another $3-400) you are WAAY up there in Price point to begin with. Remember that the Listed Prices are MSRP.

I dont even know if the Bushnell's are available for retail yet. Looked at them at the SHOT Show and was REALLY impressed.

I have Eotechs and Aimpoints, and use them occasionally with an Eotech G23.FTS magnifier...I switch the magnifier between rifles in the relatively rare situations where I need it. If you're looking at any high quality RDS + magnifier, you're looking at about $1000. In the Eotech lineup, I'd go with anything in their EXPS lineup. In that regard, I think the OPMOD sold by Optics Planet is a good deal. It's an EXPS3 with night vision disabled, more rugged and waterproof than the Eotech-branded EXPS2 and a better deal at $495.

A magnifier works well with an RDS up to about 2 MOA dot. Beyond that, it magnifies the dot into a kind of indistinct blob. The Eotechs all have a 1 MOA center dot and the magnifier works very well.

Eotech has a new version of their magnifier coming out. It was announced at SHOT, but I haven't heard anything about pricing.

You start adding up all of the parts pieces, it gets spendy fast to get a holosight and magnifier package put together. I shot one in a class a couple of years ago - I was NOT impressed. I would rather have had a real scope with 1X Magnification as an option for the close in work, shooting at range - the holosight is not going to do you any favors...

IMHO - there are some good choices out there in an ALL IN ONE solution... But the options are out there.

Sounds like an eotech xps 2 or 3 with a flip up magnifier is what you're after. Quick acquisition and a little magnification when you need it.

One problem with the XPS series is that the buttons are all on the rear. Accessing them is problematic if you have a magnifier mounted. For a magnifier, you pretty much need side buttons.

All of the carbine courses I've taken have been shooting from 50 yards max. I agree, no point to magnification at such a short range.
