AR Optic/Iron Sight Recommendations?

Postby tizzo on Sun Mar 11, 2012 5:52 pm

I've just spent the last few hours reading about optic/iron options for my newly acquired AR. This is my first AR so I'm only a little lost with so many options out there. Looking to spend less than $200, I need to get out and shoot the thing.

The upper of the AR is a DPMS Sportical Flat Top, and I've already learned I need to account for the front sight mounting on the gas block rail.

Thanks
Kyle

AR Optic/Iron Sight Recommendations?

What will the rifle be used for?
The scope for varmit hunting does not work well for three gun.
Normal distances you expect to shoot?

Plinking, but eventually 3 gun. 200 yds or less, probably closer to less.

200 will be hard to do but the Burris Tac-30 is good.

Walmart, pick up the $69 CenterPoint, read the reviews before you laugh. 8-)

All my optics are cheap-o, but my iron sights are Troy Back Up Iron Sights. They are expensive, but very well made and low profile so they should fit with any optic you put on, as well as being fully adjustable. They fold up and down when you need them and are very very sturdy. Don't buy the Magpul back up iron sights, those are garbage.

Can't go wrong with a 1-4x Burris MTAC or TAC-30. I like my MTAC at 1x better than my Burris Extreme Tactical red dot at close stuff and it's pretty impressive the hits you can make at longer ranges when you crank it up to 4x. If you get into 3-gun you will not be very happy trying to hit targts at 200-400 yards with the typical 3-5 MOA red dot.

Any mount recommendations?

I feel like there are so many friggin options out there I just need to pick something, spend money, and be done with it. Learn from any potential mistakes later.

Nikon M-223 & Leupold Mark AR might also be worth a serious look.

I've just been researching this recently and here's the opinion I came up with perusing the web for 1-4x scopes

Burris Tac-30 -- only complaints I read were the button to adjust the brightness was a pain, and the to adjusting the focus or was it the magnifier as it was the rear eyepiece that turned. Best price I found was $279 on sale--most places $299

Burris Mtac -- fixed the complaints with the Tac 30. Normally runs about $399, there is a place that has it on sale for $331. It's brown bear something, try to run across it later and post a link.

Viper Vortex PST seems to be a very popular choice on Ar15.com and M4.net Runs about $499 when in stock

Mounts

Burris PEPR mount runs anywhere from $89 to $130 depending if you want quick detach.

Larue, top of the line is going to run you about $150 to $200 depending again on quick detach

I'd recommend the SWFA SSalt for $60. Going to be about the same as the non quick detach PEPR but $30 bucks cheaper.

I got a deal on a Nikkon M223 1-4x in the Nikon mount, otherwise I would have been all over that Burris Mtac deal in a SWFA mount.

I got these on most of my AR's ... http://www.midwayusa.com/product/314296/ ... with this, ya got more adjustment fer eye relief, and if 1in high rings are still too short, ya got nother 1/2in ... otherwise short rings end up the same ... best if ya got some rings and any scope handy, jest to see where yer at

Does anyone have experience with the Konus M30 product line? The 1-4x M30 caught my attention and seems to have some pretty good reviews:

I was going to buy one but was given a Weaver 1.5x5 that works just fine instead.

Do you want to compete in tac optics or tac irons?

A 1x mag dot will let you be in irons, but 1-4x will put you in optics.

Around here, 90% of your shots will be under 40 yrds, with 9.5% being at 100yds or less, and 0.5% being further our than that. That is true for USPSA 3 gun and IDPA DMG 3 gun.
