Finally got my EOTech and Grip-Pod. The Beta C mag is quite nice too, so is the Steamlight TLRs-2.

Piston upper, only way to go in my opinion. No problems with cheap ammo and so easy to clean it's incredible.

Jschuberg...how is it you can own a non-Curio & Relic select fire AR in MN. Genuinely curious here. Are you some type of FFL?

If what I'm reading is correct, it is C&R. They were produced 1959 - 1963. So only the 1963 production year isn't C&R.

ETA: Cites:

http://pullig.dyndns.org/retroblackrifl ... e/601.html

HISTORY / BACKGROUND:-
The Model 601 was the first "AR15 Model" produced by Colt . Manufacturing started in December of 1959,
with the first 300 rifles being produced, and continued until the summer of 1963. Changes made by Colt in
the production process would include; painting the furniture green (after approx 100 were made), different
roll markings, and changing the aluminum alloy from 7075 to 6061. Less then 14,500 were produced, with
serial numbers in the 101-14,484 range. The bulk of the rifles went to the US Military with 8,500 going to the
Air Force, 1,000 going to the Army for evaluation in project AGILE, and a handful going to the Navy SEALs.
The rest went in very small numbers to police departments, and to foreign militaries such as Australia,
Burma, India, Malaya, and Singapore. Many of the components found on the 601 were "Prototypes", and
were unique to that only that model.

http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/curios-relics.html

Q: What is a firearm curio or relic?

Firearm curios or relics include firearms which have special value to collectors because they possess some qualities not ordinarily associated with firearms intended for sporting use or as offensive or defensive weapons. To be recognized as curios or relics, firearms must fall within one of the following categories:

Have been manufactured at least 50 years prior to the current date, but not including replicas thereof; or
Be certified by the curator of a municipal, State, or Federal museum which exhibits firearms to be curios or relics of museum interest; or
Derive a substantial part of their monetary value from the fact that they are novel, rare, bizarre, or from the fact of their association with some historical figure, period, or event.

The 601 Armalite Mfg. by Colt is on the C&R NFA list. A ratty one (which is the way to go if you're going to configure it differently) can be had starting at about 10K

Woot! Something fun we can finally own in MN! I honestly didn't ever look for AR's on the list before.

Yep, this is on the C&R list, making it a MN legal machinegun :) The model 601 is currently the only MN legal full auto AR-15 available. When I spoke to the ATF, they estimate that there are only a few thousand in the US. Most never returned from overseas or were destroyed by the military.

There are some restrictions on what changes I can make to it or risk losing it's C&R status (no permanent modifications, etc), but I contacted both an NFA attorney and the ATF's technology branch, and was told that the changes above are okie-dokie as long as I notify the NFA branch in writing so they can update the registry. Needless to say I was a bit nervous while going through the process about making a mistake or screwing something up, considering the potential legal consequences. My experience was that the ATF was extremely helpful in answering all of the questions I had, and in offering me advice on the best way to go through the process. From beginning to end, it took a little over a year for all of the associated paperwork to be completed.

This is what she looks like with the original upper and furniture as an evil gray/green rifle:

Image

I'm never going to shoot it in it's original configuration, but I am planning on building a replica 601 upper and set of furniture for it so that I can shoot it in an 'original looking' configuration.

You're absolutely right, that's where I bought it from. The question is, how could you have possibly known that?

Wait a minute, you're not following me around watching everything I do, trying to put computer chips in my brain or anything are you?

Gotcha, that makes sense. They usually have quite a few C&R machine guns in inventory if anyone is looking for one. I noticed they also have the following listed as 'due in soon':

COLT MODEL 01 C&R AR-15 (M16 FULL AUTO) FEATURED IN THE "BLACK RIFLE" VOL1
WWII C&R RATED COLT M2 .50 H/B MACHINE GUN AS NEW WITH TRIPOD/T&E AND PINTLE
