have you machined your own lower?

Postby Anokamnman on Sat Apr 28, 2012 12:37 pm

So now that I am just about done with my mosin bubba, I am thinking about machining my own lower receiver for my next AR build. First I have to look into the legalities. But it doesn't seem to difficult. Have found lower receiver forgings for cheap. And I have access to the equipment to complete the project. Just wondering if any of you have done this before? What difficulties did you experience?

Legalities? Just don't sell it. Its yours for life. You have enough experience to do it no problem.

Hold on guys. A friend of mine makes special weapons for the folks who need them, and he has to maintain an FFL. I'd check into it a bit if I were you...

As long as you conform with NFA and you do not intend to resell it, it does not violate any regulations.

So you would machine, engrave (make, model, serial number), anodize, etc.

Sounds like a lot of work, but if you have all the tools already and you can ensure that the metal quality is reliable, I think this might be a fun project.

Actually you can sell it down the road. It just can't be manufactured with the intent to sell. i.e. a lovely ATF grey area.

I you get set up to do this, maybe we could have a build party. I have some forgings just sitting around waiting to be born into real receivers.

As has been noted, as long as you make the to semi-auto specs, there are no laws to prevent individuals from making their own guns. And you can sell them if you wish but you cannot make them with the intent of selling them. They are supposed to be for personal use only or something to that effect.

Good luck!

Oooh a lower making party sounds like fun!

IIRC you can buy 80% receivers without an FFL.There are plenty of folks around that have "jigs" to complete them. You do have serial # etc.I don't know if you have to pay a tax.Seems to me you don't.Just have to tell the BATFE what you are doing.DOUBLE CHECK THAT THOUGH!!!!They maybe even issue you a serial #?I don't remember exactly, but read about it a while back on another forum.I guess if I ever did one I'd just Duracoat it.I'm not sure what the "military spec" finish is,or how you would do it.I know Tactical Machining sells 80%ers.Seems to me that lowers are cheap enough to buy in the first place.Plus I know THEY know what they are doing.Me?.....I dunno what I'd end up with.
