My Bubba Mosin Project

Postby hoel6466 on Tue Jun 05, 2012 8:26 am

This started out as a hex receiver That had black paint covering areas that had been messed up by corrosion. I spent quite a bit of time learning how the rifle functioned and trying to improve the the feel of the bolt and trigger. It took me awhile before I figured out what I wanted to do with this rifle and in the end I think it turned out well .

List of mods

-Shortened barrel to 18" and threaded the end
-Purchaced a stock and pillar/epoxy bedded the action
-Trued the bolt and machined a new firing pin to eliminate the slop, this also improved trigger feel
-Reworked the trigger:
------Trued the trigger on a surface grinder
------Installed larger trigger pin
------Shimmed the trigger in the receiver
------Purchased a Finnish style sear ( hands down the best money I've spent so far)
------Ground and polished the sear surfaces to give a positive engagement
------Installed a ghetto overtravel stop screw
-Installed a NCstar pistol scope on the 3/8" dovetail
-Installed a bipod
-Installed a custom muzzle break
-Parkerized the entire rifle

Gun $100
Stock $100
Sear $15
Scope $50
Bipod $35
Rings $6

Total $306

Here are the results at 100yrds

The two shots next to the bullseye are where I intened. The one below those two I'm not sure how it got there. The two shots down and to the right I pulled both of them and knew it. This target wouold be more impressive if I could actually shoot.

The pictures don't do it justice... Even after seeing it by flashlight at plblark's a while back. Feels good on the shoulder too.

Nice job man.

It is beautiful. No denying that. What was the total build cost?

And what about this classifies it as a bubba?
Wrap that around your overly muscled left wing and row your dinghy in counterclockwise circles as a result.

As Gunforhire pointed out earlier the over travel stop screw is kind of bubba...

Very nice rifle. Love it. Throw some duct tape on the stock. Then it will be a bubba. Lol

Had the same scope setup for one range trip, but found that the rings were moving forward under recoil. Have you noticed any shift yet? or did you do something to compensate for this?
