Sighting in difficulties

Postby DitchDR on Wed Aug 01, 2012 10:12 am

About a month ago or so, I picked up a DPMS LR308. Has the big heavy barrel. 1:10" twist. The scope I have on it is a Simmons 6-18x40 wih adjustable parllax to 100 yards. Yes I know I should get a different scope. The reason i have this scope on there is that I had it on a Remington 700 VTR .308 and I was shooting 1.476" @ 200 yards with it. SO why not put it on here. The scope is mounted on a 2" riser. I zeroed it at 50 yards. When I move farther back my shots hit high and left and closer than 50 yards the shots are low and right. Ammo used: 165gr Hornady Superformance, HSM 168gr Match, 150gr Hornady Superformance, 150gr Remington, 180gr Federal, 150gr federal, 150gr Federal Fusion all with the same results. I can understand higer and lower at varying distances, but I dont understand the left to right. Can any of you give me any pointers? Should I zero at 100 and see what happens?

Are you sure that you are not canting the rifle to the left slightly? Are you sure that the Scope is mounted perfectly? Thats where I would start.

+1 That would account for the lateral shift at differing distances. Zeroing at a different distance will not fix cant in the scope mount or your hold.

I dont think Im canting the rifle, but I could be. I am shooting from a bipod, but that doesnt mean I am not twisting it one way or the other. Ill take another look at the scope. Who knows, I may have been canting the rifle when I look through the scope when I mounted it. The riser is an AR riser Weaver is the brand. SO im pretty sure that on strait. Ill try it in a lead sled and maybe have some one else shoot it. I dont think its the rifle itself giving me the problem. Its either me or the scope and Im leaning towards me being the problem.
