No offense but staking on the gas key is about the last place I would look for an issue with short stroking on an AR. Start with mags as others have stated moving to gas tube obstruction, then possible misalignment of gas block.

Thanks for all the input....it is much appreciated.

I'll start with what sounds to be the more likely culprits and work my way down the list, while breaking in the rifle to see if it improves.

I was using PMags but I didn't think to watch if one worked better than the other. Maybe I'll try a different brand as well.

What type of ammo are you using? I thought my first AR was doing the same thing and turned out it was the underpowered steel cased ammo. Switch to brass and never had another issue.

It is not the ammo, not the mags.

Sounds like a gas block and or tube issue. Gas port may be obstructed or block misaligned or gas hole in bbl may be undersized.

This.

If the gas hold is undersized you'll need a heavier buffer weight. Try an H or H2 to see if things improve.

Nothing but issues...

If it's a problem that I don't have the tools or ability to fix on my own, does anyone have a suggestion on where to take it to diagnose/fix in the northern suburbs?

Thanks....this website is awesome

Where are you located? Lots of folks (including myself) that can probably help you figure it out.
