Anyone have some experience with the h&r/nef handi rifle in the center fire calibers?

What do you want to know? I own 2 of them a youth model in 7mm-08 that both my kids used as their beginner deer rifle and a Ultra model in .25-06 that is lights out accurate on deer. Very solid simple tools at an inexpensive price point.

I've just heard mixed reviews from people. Id like to pick up a 223 hvy bbl for varmints and a 20ga rifled bbl for deer but wasn't sure how accurate they are.I know I need a sb2 action for center fire but what would be a good price, alhmans has a few anywhere from 160 - 300 used and I've seen em new for 260

My .25-06 is a moa rifle all day long. It has taken a dozen or so deer all 1 shot kills, most dropped on the spot, and never has missed for me. I would put it up against any of my higher priced rifles. Maybe I got lucky but with the 26 in heavy barrel it has been a sweet shooter. I think I only paid 179 for it but that was in 1999 I think. I would think you could still order them new for 250 or so. The youth model I picked up for 130 but that was when gander was closing the old holiday store in frisky. That one both kids tend to hold a 6 in group or so at 100 yards at age 12-14. I tend to get 2-3 inch groups with it but the stock does not fit me and I tend to be bouncing the scope off my head since it is set back for their eye relief so probably not my best shooting and I am sure the rifle is fairly accurate. I believe you can still order extra barrels right from nef for about 100 so I would order the rifle you want and then order a shotgun barrel. I do also have 3 of their shotguns. Very solid workhorses all. 1 was a semi custom water fowler with 3.5 chamber and mod choke that I talked them into making for me (long story).

Nice write up there. That has been my experiance. I first got mine when I was in college and had little money. Bought a used scope off a buddy for $20 and it has been a work horse ever since. That rifle honestly has been the one the majority of my deer have been shot with over the years. They are just a very solid, simple, safe, well built tool. Dang, this is making me want to go buy another....

Well I did it, bought my first gun from Gander mountain. Went in to look at a sleepingbag and thought I would just play with some of their guns while I was there. I ended up finding a new nef handi on clearance for 229, I wasn't super excited about it being chambered in 204 ruger but I got over it quick.

I had a HB .243 and I liked it it was lights out accurate I just had a hard time with it and regreted buying the Heavy Barreled version. I sold it and bought a Bolt Action .243 that I'm happier with. More for comfort and ease of transport than anything. I actually like the Handi Rifles and at some point might get another with the Muzzle Loader Option for late Deer Hunting in MN.

So I was thinking, the handi doesn't have the option to put a pistol grip on it and use it for deer like the T/C does. Is there any legal way to cut a stock and bbl down and make it into a pistol?

I'd guess, it'd hafta be originally purchased as a "pistol" ... and kept that way!

IIRC, T/C is a named exception ... at least, fer the "keeping it that way" part ... but ya'd hafta verify that!

I don't think it's unreasonable that a handi rifle might be treated similarly ... particularly if they don't require an original "pistol" purchase ... but I wouldn't try it ... without at least a "letter" from the ATF!

I'd jest buy a new blackhawk fer $4xx! 8-)
