New Remington 870 Tactical extraction issues.

Postby PHATSPEED7x on Sat Sep 08, 2012 2:33 pm

I just bought a brand new Remington 870 Tactical 7 shot 18.5" cylinder bore bead sight shotgun for home defense, and just shooting in general.

Image

My first couple of shots with the gun I noticed the racking of the gun was really hard... I shot about 20 rounds though it, then cleaned it and lubed the heck out of the action, slide, and all other moving parts. I went to shoot it a few more times, and I had a couple shells where the rim ripped partly off the case as I tried to get the gun to extract the shell. And these were just standard Remington no. 8 bird shot rounds. I put about 10 Federal Tru-ball 1oz slugs though the gun, and it extracted them a little better. Total shot count thought the gun right now is about 60 rounds (50 of bird shot, and 10 slugs).

For a comparison I shot my 870 express I bought used, and that one worked just perfect. Do 870 need a "break in" period? Or does Remington no. 8 shot just that cheap? Next 100 round bulk pack I buy for breaking clays will be Federal. Never had issues with Federal.

:) Yes, you do need to breakin your 870 you should checkout this site http://www.aiptactical.com/ he specializes in 870 builds and gives practical advice . Go to wallyworld and pickup a couple 100 packs of shotshells and go abuse your shoulder :)

Do 870 need a "break in" period?..................

Go very lightly on the oil. It accumulates, and attracts and collects dirt/junk. Some break in always helpful, but if parts not put together correctly, you're just wearing/beating it up. There should be NO binding of the slide/action bars.

I don't believe there is anything wrong with the action. I had the same problem when I put a brand new 18.5 bead sight (same barrel as you) on a used 870. The shells are getting stuck in the chamber hence the ripped rim. It's worse with certain shells. I took a small buffing wheel on a dremal and polished the chamber just to shine it up a bit. Then I used an abrasive wheel and ground off (just enough) material on the barrel right before the chamber where the rim contacts. This is where my problem was. If you remove the barrel and drop in a shell, you should be able to see where it starts to bind up.

+1 on the above

Let me go one further to help you out a little - a trick my uncle taught me... Remove BBL - take a shell and use a SHARPIE to completely color the Brass (use a high base shell) insert and look for witness marks. Sometimes that can tell you where to polish/grind.

Try changing brands of ammo.
My 1100 would not cycle reliably and occasionally needed to be persuaded to open the action when I shot Winchester ammo, Remington and Federal worked flawlessly!

I bought a 100 round bulk pack of sporting clay loads from walmart of the Remington brand. Figured it would run in the shotgun the best. Works just fine with my 870 field model.

Next bulk lot will be Federal for sure.

My 11-48 has shot weight issues more then brand issues. I avoid Winchester ammo like the plague, regardless of application, personal preference. But everything else runs fine it. My pumps... They don't care as long as they get ammo. Both 870s.

I did some more shooting last night with Federal 00 buck and didn't have any issues with the gun. Ran everything smooth and racked clean every time. Gun now has 110 rounds though it. My shoulder is not too bad either. Building up a tolerance to recoil.

Tried some federal target loads and I'm still having jamming issues... it's bending the shells down by the base when it goes to extract... never seen this before...

Sounds like the chamber is a bit tight.

Different situation. 1100 is an auto. Your pump should eat everything. I only own one 870 and it was used. I recently purchased a brand new BPS, the action is stiffer than my used BPS but your gun should extract without tearing shells apart. I'm no 870 expert but in my opinion I would get a pump that runs reliably, or send it in to Remington if you continue have issues. Maybe these other guys are right, maybe it does need a break in period but that sounds odd to me. Pumps should be almost 100% malfunction free, thats why we use them. Had to come back to wdit this post... COme to think of it my buddy bought a new 870 the other day and we shot on SUnday at bills. He shot buckshot and bird shot, no issues.
